Wilco is coming to Radio City next week and I may get tickets for the sold out shows there. The thing is, I am not too sure about their live show as they seem to have gotten into a lot of surrealistic, indie-rock guitar wanking of late, some of which I adore, but there are times when I'm like "enuff already!"

Anyway, I loved them with Jay Bennett in the past... can you see where I'm going here? Is their show still worth it? I listened to a live version of "Spiders" on their website... real cool tune but it gets a bit too 'gobbily-gook' at times, even more so live...

AHH
maybe I'm just an old guy... tho' Tweedy and I are only a year apart.

SO
anyone seen 'em of late?

I've never seen Wilco, but yeah, I miss Jay Bennett. The disc that Jay did with Edward Burch ["The Palace at 4 A.M. (part 1)"] is a pretty cool pop record.

I've not heard anything from "A Ghost is Born". The thing I loved about Wilco, Son Volt, & Uncle Tupelo was the marriage of alt. country with rock & pop sensibilities. Tweedy seems to be getting further & further away from what I dug about the stuff in the first place, but it's his call.

Tweedy & Bennett are both certifiable nuts. Have you guys seen the film "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart"? Those two guys squabble & bicker like a couple of old hens, it's pretty funny.

they are better than ever because they've now got Nels Cline also playing guitar. I think he's about the best living guitarist in the world, the closest thing to Coltrane I've ever. Just the absolute best!!

The new tour, new players are much more moody and sometimes "less rocking" than earlier (read Bennet era) but the sound and feel of the shows are much more dimensional than past shows. I like hearing the more atmospheric stuff mixed in with the classics. I have seen them 12 times since their first tour and they still amaze me.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I'd never heard Nels Cline until this evening. I went to his site & checked out some clips. That guy wears a lot of different hats! One minute I'm reminded of Metheny, next it's a freeform acid jazz noisemaking fest, then it's a power punk pop song. He sorta blurs the lines between "minimalist" & "virtuoso". I'm impressed. Unique player for sure, & an interesting choice for Wilco.

Howdy!

I saw them three times two weekends ago.

One of those shows was the best show I've ever seen.

Nels Cline > Jay Bennett

"Handshake Drugs" is always incredible. I can't recommend the show enough.

It's great that an awesome player like Nels can finally make it w/ a band like Wilco, it warms the heart to see him succeed. I used to see him around here in LA for years playing to tiny crowds and devastating all in attendance. I use to drive from Oceanside to Santa Monica every monday which is a 2hour drive to see him play.. the Nels Cline trio that is, and I always walked away so impressed I'd want to stop playing guitar altogether.
He covers a huge range, playing w/ country guys, straight jazz, covering Coltrane's interstellar space, and pure noise to doing Miles cover band and he does it easily and naturally. He's the best absolute best improviser I've ever seen, I've seen him in bands ranging from a 15 piece to solo w/ guitar and he always impresses. W/ Wilco it's probably as subdued as you'll see him, he also plays w/ Watt alot in the same kind of way. But if you get to see the NEls Cline Singers in your town,,, do it!! You will not regret seeing Nels unchained!!

That guy is a very interesting player. On the second clip ('Rampling By The Sea') on his website, he's getting a pretty good version of pat metheny's sound. I'd always heard that metheny used chorus and echo basically. Does anyone know how you dial that in? Is it just a little light chours and some slapback?

Check out "Red-Header Stranger" by Carla Bouzlich w/ Nels Cline on guitar and lap steel, Scott Amendola on drums, Devin Hoff on upright bass, Jenny Scheinmann on violin and guest spots on 2 of the tunes by none other than Willie Nelson himself!

According to Pat Metheny, the output of the Digitech 2101 is run into two Lexicon Prime-Time digital delay lines. The unit on the left is set to 14 ms delay, and the one on the right at 26 ms delay. Both units are set to sweeping with a sine wave at a low depth and rate. Each delay has a very slight "pitch bend" controlled by the VCO (sine wave) inside the prime-time. This is what gives Metheny his patented "chorused" sound. Each of these signals is then sent into a Yamaha amp and power amp coming out of two speakers on the stage.
