I am looking to get one. I am looking for input from anyone who owns one, please tell, me what you like about yours or dislike about others, recommendations, etc...I want to create textural type stuff(music) with it. i'd like one that can track single note lines well. I'm leaning towards Lovetone but the big briar stuff looks pleasing too.thank you

Hi Sean, I believe I can really help you w/ this, I am a ring mod freak.
here's a lists of what I think are the best ring mods you can find and buy. All of which I've owned at one time or another.
1. Moogerfooger ring mod
When I got this it changed everything!! It was alot better than any other ring mods I had played up to that point and still is the best I've played now minus the 360 system ring mod which is almost non existant.
It's really hi-fi sounding w/ no distortion of the signal or the ring mod, it tracks better than the rest and has tremelo and other tweaked pitch dive stuff you can do w/ it. Plus you can mix between the clean and ring modded sound. And on top of that you can use an expression pedal to control 4 of the 5 knobs!! Pretty much all you need.
2.Snarling Dog Mold Spore
The best bang for the buck , these can be had for about $100 or $120 new. The high end on these isn't exceptional but it holds it's own. And the lower frequencies are really bell like. plus it's easy to change pitch w/ just the pedal. Not nearly as action packed as the mooger fooger but if you're on a tight budget it's highly recommended.
3. Black Cat Ring Mod
Exactly like the Maestro ring mod which sells for $800 plus except it's alot smaller and less noisey. Only thing you can do is ring mod, no tremelos or anything but it's a great ring mod, the volumn is a little lower than standard but not by much. You can also control the pitch (in theory) w/ a voltage pedal but it doesn't work that well when the pedal is in.
4. Lovetone Ring mod or the ringer
It's expensive and pink, already in trouble as far as I'm concerned. First of all, as a ring mod it's pretty lame. I'm speaking strickly for the ring mod, it's really lo-fi and can't get any ring mod w/out some distortion, some people love this. As a noise/sound pedal it's alot of fun, it does tremelo as well as octave fuzz(really cool) , fuzz, pitch dives and some theremin action.
5. Maestro ring mod
it's famous and expensive, I had Larry Carlton's and it pretty much sucked. It's kind of noisey and it takes up alot of space w/out doing enough to justify the amount of space it takes up. It's very fragile and was probably quite cool in the 70's.
6.Dod Gonkulator
Ok maybe this should get best bang for the buck, it's about $45 at most music stores and it does do real ring mod. The bad is you can't change the pitch and it's a dod pedal so it will die someday and fuck you up along the way.
7. EH freq analyzer
It's not really a ring mod more like a stoner version of a pitch shifter. Does the bell like tones associated w/ ring mods but the high freq don't ring, at all.
8. the Colorsound ring mod
very average and none descript ring mod, pretty lame and the pedal control is even lamer, very little range and the sound is dead.
Haven't had a chance to try out the Frostwave yet but Toyz told me it was kind of weak compared to the moogerfooger. Good luck finding what you need. It's my favorite effect ever!!

Never owned a ring modulator, but if I was going to get one, I like the clips on the Mooger Fooger....big box though.

Though I don't gig and play more traditional pop/rock stuff when I'm home practicing, I love ring modulators and plan to own one soon. I tried the Mooger Fooger and it was great. I played it for about a half hour nonstop tweaking the knobs along the way. Sometimes I like to off on tangents when I play. This one is definitely on my wish list.

Everything I could want in one.

i have a question about the mogger ring mod..it sounds like everything i want in a ring mod..ut i heard that it has a weird noise gate that kinda kills the natural decay of notes..since i have no tried the mooger yet i cannot tell this first hand..can anyone vouch for this

that is the one thing that stops it from being perfect. I don't know if it's a noise gate but it's some kind of gate and a preamp too. I don't like it so i run it by itself in a loop and bring in the ring mod only when i want ring mod, otherwise it's completely out of my signal. Some people like the way it colors the sound?!? But it cuts off stuff when it gets too low. Sucks but nothing is perfect.

i have both the moogerfooger filter and the delay. they use input and output buffers which the signal is always going through. i have noticed their adverse effect when i set the drive on the filter past 2 o'clock. when the effect is engaged it gives a nice subtle distortion that helps the filter chew. but bypassed the distortion is very unpleasant, harsh. i use the same tactic as mr.c and put it in a loop. this is a great example of the value of true bypass. in an answer to your question, to avoid the "gating" effect i have been told by the kind people at big briar to feed it a strong signal. don't use the input volume or drive whichever to give it a boost either. i always like to know the cons of a product before i buy it, along with the praise, of corurse. so, i'll give you the scoop. the construction looks nice, but is very poor. i have knocked two knobs loose to where they slide more easily than i would like. this is due to the fact that they don't mount their pots to the base, rather the circuit board (and i have two left feet). i know keep my mf's off the floor in a pedal rack i made for myself. a little hassle for a great sound. also, don't buy the moogerfooger brand cv pedals. they are all plastic and look like they would be easily broken. i say look like because i have not broken one yet, yet. now time for the praise: gorgeous, beautiful, pristine, sound.
