So I need a single coil pickup for the neck position of my tele. I want something different that can blend with my Fralin Steel Pole 42 (7.5 K). Been looking at all kinds of stuff, and I don't mind routing the body. Have you tried anything unusual that sounded really good to you? (ie. non-Fender or Gibson)

What's the matter w/ another SP42? Just wondering because I think the next project I take on is going to be replacing my Fender Tex-Mex's in my Nashville Deluxe w/ SP42s.

Think there were a couple posts from you and someone else describing the SP42s as a P90/Tele hybrid which sounds pretty good to me.

I think DonneR has a Filtertron in the neck position of one of his Teles.

Check out TV Jones if you go that route - I've got 2 TV'Trons on the way - one plus, one regular (HB sized Filtertrons). Those are for a Gretsch Hollowbody though - not a Tele.

Well the neck SP42 is kind of so-so. It doesn't blow me away. It's rather stratty, so it doesn't sound bad at all, it's just not too amazing. I attribute that to the narrow dimension of the coil. I even considered another SP42 bridge pup in the neck. Using 500K pots sounds great with these pups though, and it really gets some of the good P-90 character while not losing too much of the tele sound. Nobody likes the tele neck pup all that much, and there's no consensus at the "tdpri" on what's a good solution.

Good to know - Thanks Nathan. I'm looking for something with a little more growl, a little more throat, and a little less twang.

Thought about the Seymour Duncan Quarter-Pound or Little '59?

I'll have to head over to TDPRI and read up a bit.

I'm in the midst of putting a late 60's (?) Gretsch Filtertron into the neck spot on a Tele. Not un-heard of, but definitely not the norm. We'll see.

As a matter of fact, I did get an oddball neck pickup. Here's the pic. It's from an old Framus archtop. Don't know for sure if it works yet, but it's supposed to (owner played acoustic only -he's actually from Tampa). If it doesn't match the Fralin SP, it's getting a rewind maybe with new magnet(s).

As Jerry Donoghue says, "Tele pick-up in the bridge rules, Strat pick-up in the neck rules!" I've always thought most Tele neck pick-ups are too muffled and weak-sounding. Using a strat p/u restores the chirp and attack. I love my Suhr V60LP's - clean but with character to burn.
