I have a Jauernig Gristle King which is a very interesting pedal: it's a two-button pedal that combines his DGTM OD and his Luxury Drive clean boost, with a pre/post switch that allows you to place the clean boost either before or after the OD—very useful for easy switching between rhythm grit/singing lead with a single-channel amp. Great pedal in theory (I love the idea of practicing and light gigging w/ a tuner and one OD/boost pedal), though I wish I liked the sound of the OD a little better. My understanding is that the Fulldrive GT-500 also has a switchable pre/post thing going on, and I like my Fat Boost II a lot: what's the consensus on the GT 500? Are there other combo OD/boost pedals that have a switchable pre/post option?
I have a Carl Martin Hot Drive N Boost and the boost is awesome, makes my 4*12 sound like well 2 4*12's but the drive is so so....I am also looking for the perfect drive boost combo as well...thinking about OCD for drive and then look for a stand alone boost....
I have an OCD with a Timmy set for clean in front of it. Sounds great for me. It's been something I've been experimenting with for some time now and finally found the magic combonation.

Yea, I think it's better to have 2 separate pedals, that way you're not stuck to one or the other if they don't really do it for you. I had the first run GT-500 and it's fairly nice, but generally the OD side always sounded better than the Distortion side. I hear Fuller has tweaked since then. I currently own a Menatone WMB and I've had a few others with 2 buttons, they're all usable (more so than just one switch) but in the end, I prefer having a great dirt pedal and a great boost pedal. Then if you want to switch the order, physically switch the order around!

I've been running my timmy after my OCD as a boost. Tell me a bit about running it in front of the OCD please. What tones occur from each and together.
What settings do you use on both the timmy and OCD. I might want to try this switch out.
thanks mojo

The Catalinbread Hyperpak (http://www.catalinbread.com/Hyperpak.html) is really great for goosing up a good pedal. I just run it in front of a fave stomper and PRESTO! Instant, relatively transparent gain/boost.

I have those pedals as well. Tell me all about what happens. I´m curious to hear more.

My Box of Rock has two buttons, and i enjoy having them both on.
I did own a v3 OCD, and tho it did get traded out, i found it a perfectly enjoyable pedal. A little scooped for my taste, and i didn't enjoy it as much at low gain. Still a very good pedal that i could gig with any guitar or amp, and probably get by with just the one distortion pedal. If i were buying again personally, i would just buy new (v4?) and not sweat it.
cheers

I have a Double DGTM with a white half strength side and a black 100 proof side. Tim custom painted it sunburst for me, in fact it's the pedal on his website under 'custom pedals'. Damn that is a sweet sounding pedal. I have a Tim also, which is a great pedal, but it's not really 2 indpendant channels like the Dbl DGTM. The Fulldrive 2 should also be considered, pretty nice pedal, perhaps just a wee bit behind the aforementioned 2.

The two switch overdrive thing got out of hand for me...
Fulldrive 2-overdrive with a boost on top good pedal but not that flexible
Blackstone Overdrive-2 independant overdrives each with an option to have more mids or less mids and with an overall mid cut tone control. Then you can tweak the internal gain and treble pots. Then you can swap out componants..
King of Tone V2-boost and overdrive with shared gain and tone. Each channel is either/or. Then you can tweak the channels to be both boost or both overdrive. And it's got an internal treble boost control. The V4 has seperate channels and controls.
I play in a jam band where we swap. I borrow a board for that and across the front is...
Bi Comprosser KOT V4 Sun Lion and Super Duper...
Talk about two switch heaven. I normally use the Super Duper (got to get me one of those). Two channel boost, seperate channels vol vol and master no tone but I've never wished for it.

I have been trying lots of od's for some time experimenting with stacking, order, and whatnot. I could not get beyond the ocd. I just love it. I now have two, one set for low gain on the lp setting to use with my strat and and one set to higher gain on the hp setting for my 335. My only problem to tackle was goosing the ocd for soloing. I found that stacking ods either before or behind the ocd just made things soung too mushy or muddy. I was not looking for a real sturated sound, just the ocd goosed a bit. Anyway, I finally gave up and just took my old (grey) fatboost and put it in front of the ocd and that worked pretty well excepted the lows got a little too flabby.
So just a few months ago I picked up a Timmy at Toys (birthday present from my wife) and threw it on the board. I had hear tons of good things from the forums on the Timmy so I was excited to try it. I like the Timmy on it's own particularly for low gain work but when I put it in front of the ocd it just worked for what I was looking for. It pushes the ocd into further gain without coloring the ocd. it just sounds like I turned up the gain on the ocd. I pretty much set the bass, treble, and gain to 9 o'clock and the volume to 12 o'clock or higher for a clean boost. Adds more distortion and sustain and helps the ocd cut through the mix for soloing. Unlike the other clean boosts I tried in front of the ocd the Timmy doesn't produce muddy lows. I'm sure there is a technical reason these pedals work so well together but all I know is that it sounds good to me.
I don't like the Timmy overdriven stacked with the ocd so much but set clean it works great. FWIW both ocd's are v.4 and I run the low gain with a dunlop 18v wall wart.
Try it out. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I liked the GT-500, but it was too uncompressed for me. It was somehow "hard to play". I ended up going with the Tim at that time because, while less versatile, it just sounded fatter and "felt" better. I find myself not satisfied with pedals if they don't "feel" right, like if they don't do my bidding. It's more about my expectations for sustain and compression-it's not really an eq thing.
I think the Xotic pedals (AC+ and BB+) have the pre/post option, and from the clips I've heard those are very nice boxes. I love the idea of two-in-one pedals, and I know there are some good ones out there, but I've always been in the separate pedal camp. I get some pretty nice tones using a Bad Bob or an RC Booster to goose an OD - the ODs on the board right now are a Direct Drive, Keeley BD-2, and an Aramat Soul Patch.(which is really a Tonebender) None of those are very costly or sexy dirt boxes, but they sound great when pushed a bit.
First off, my apologies to Flea Biscuit for fixating on this OCD/Timmy combo. There have been other players here that use this combo and find it very happening so this kind of peaked my interest and could serve as a possibility for you.
Coldwater, What type of amp/speaker setup are you using? Amp clean or dirty? Could you share your exact OCD settings please? I’m running a clean Bandmaster Reverb head into 12’s. (Weber C12N (with a JBL -120 sometimes). OCD is Version 3.
I know what you mean about the low end getting flabby (when the drive is up anyway). I’m still trying to figure out what mode to use but right now I’m using HP mode since I’m using it on the higher gain setting (V=10 o’clock, T=12:00, Drive=2:00) and the LP mode gives me to much low end.
Pedal is very clear when the drive setting is pulled back closer to 12:00, but right now I’m liking the drive turned up to around 2:00-3:00 to give my Fender that gritty zeppelin Custard Pie sound. Only problem is that the scoped cool rhythm sound does lack something for solos. Hence our discussion...
I like the Timmy set fairly clean as well. I was using it with some success after all overdrives as a boost. I had it set to asymmetrical and liked the increased breakup but now I’m running it like you, totally clean, at least through my setup.
I have a Tonebone classic in front of the OCD as well that I might setup like a tube screamer with some mids to goose the OCD but I’m going to try the Timmy in front of it as well.
I think Ill be rehearsing tomorrow night and will experiment and post back on my findings.

My two electrics are a strat and a 335 and i have to set the ocd seperately for each. For the strat I use lp mode with gain at 9 o'clock, tone at 11 o'clock and volume set to unity. i run this ocd with a 18v adapter.
With the 335 I set the ocd at hp mode with drive at 12 o'clock, tone at 12 o'clock and volume at unity. This ocd runs at 9v adapter. Both ocds are v.4.
For amps I have a BF bassman. The amp is modded to sound a bit Trainwreckish. Lots of mids. I turn up the lows a bit and set the volume to just shy of breakup. With that head I use an old Fender 212 cab with Weber 8- watt Californias. The other amp (This one is my current fave of the two) is a modded NOS Blues Jr with a Weber 12f150. I play the master volume all the way up and set the volume to just shy of breakup (around 4). I mic this rig and lately its been the set-up of choice.
The Timmy is the only other od on my board. I really like it on its own for low gain tones but I mostly use it set to clean to boost the ocds. Gain, bass, treble at 9 o'clock and volume wherever it seems right.

I'm a Tim/Timmy user. Lately, I've been leaving the Tim on all the time, with just a hint of gain. I'll use boost mode for more "hair". Timmy is set for higher gain.
I'd love to try that Brent Mason pedal out sometime.

I have been happy with my Fulltone GT-500 for the past several months. I really like the boost side for many applications, and I like the OD side for certain things. Some like the GT-500 better running at 18 volts, but after a few tests, I am sticking with 9 volts. 18 volt was interesting, but it got too noisey for me / my board.
Okay, I feel like a little bit of a dork for replying to my own thread, but I just saw the new "Double Hotcake" at a competing website whose name I will not speak. Sounds pretty interesting, though pricey at $349.
