First: little story, sad but true. I watched the PT method DVD VERY closely, even took 15 pages of notes. I also noted, using workspace, how easy it was to bring drum loops based on bpm. Well I put off actually trying the drum looping until about a week later, review, notes again. Since I bought the factory bundle for my mbox2, I knew that I had some type of drum library called BFD-lite. Except couldn't even audition a loop/clip in protools via workspace. Finally I navigated to BFD audio in program files and learned that it was indeed there. Finally, a nice fellow replied to my email that BFD's sample are not loops, and one usually uses a midi inttrument to access them. So then I realized that this isn't what I wanted. I WANTED LOOPS, for quick jamming, practicing or even crazy tracks where a perfect drum tone wouldn't matter. While working in Taiwan, I probably won't be spending cash on drum mics and learing that art. Loops should be enough. I want to be able to drag drum loops based on a search bpm (that I saw in the PT DVD) on drag it to a stereo track in my grid window. THen I did a google search only to find literally hundreds of bass/drum/synth loops. So I book marked probably too many.

My question is this: What free sample loop sites do you guys use in protools ( le even better)???? Please tell me the sites. I don't mind paying for loops, too if I exhaust all the free samples. So which sites have great pay loops CDs??

Second: Which loops or file types or files names will I know will work best with protools. I know wavs should be ok. I saw things like vst, and acid and other names that I don't really understand yet. Help me out.

BFD should have midi files and drum hits in it, so doing it with Midi could be as easy as loops, or even easier. The Midid files contained in BFD play the sounds contained in BFD.

That said, these are some loops that I use.

Ilio - Different ones.

Drums on Demand.

Discrete Drums.

VST is a plug in format, mostly for FX, although there are VST Instruments. Acid is a sample format that lets you time streach.

Loops usually come in AIFF or Wav.

Hi Gil thanks for the info! Sorry to redundant, but does vst, acid and the other type of samples work with pt le 7.1? Should only be looking for wav files for best sound quality or is aiff ok ,too? Do the pay sites you listed all work with pt le ? What bundles did you buy from those sites?

I'm not sure which ones work with ProTools.
VST is usually a Plugin Format - it's a program that effects the sound.

A loop is a recording, just like a CD, that has a start and end point that allows you to play it around and around, and it sounds continous.

AIFF and WAV are equal - the quallity of the loop is determined by the recording and storage - 16bit, 24bit, ect.

I have Drums on Demand and from Ilio Burning Grooves.

Go here, too.

thanks Gil!

Big help, and you are the only one who seems to know about this stuff so I am glad for the guidance OB-1 ! hehe

Regarding loops, would :
http://www.loopmasters.com/products/wav-mp3/Sh_120%20Synth%20Loop%203C%20.wav

work fine in pt le? AS you say it is nothing more than a cd audio file. If so, where do I save these ( for instance, what is your protocol )files, since they might be very high in number and I want it organized and easy for pt and my DAW to run smooth. Do ALL loops have bpm attached in the file, so that a pt workspace search IE find: 120 audio would locate all wavs at 120 bpm?

I am curious about bass loops, is there any standard about what KEY signature these are in?

How did you find Dmoz? Never heard of it before.

Well, I'm on a Mac, so it might be different for you.

But I just save them in a folder, and organize them as I can. It's a struggle, and I don't have a better system then calling them "Drum Loops" and by disk name.

Those loops should work in ProTools - it's an audio file. But I bet they have some sample to download.

I don't use Bass loops, but I bet there's no standard.

I don't think all loops have BPM in the name or as a piece of MetaData.

Found Dmoz from Google.

An excellent easy to use program for creating loops is FruityLoops. It costs money, but is very intuitive.

For a bunch, pick up a copy of Computer Music. The cover disk always has a heap of drum samples, plus they include newbie tutorials. Good luck!

THanks Shamus! cool stuff. What version did you end up with? I don't really know what is involved in making a loop other if the wav can trimmed and faded properly, you should be able to make any loops using you want, using any wav. How does this program work, or excell in?

GIL,

Once I receive and save from Loop wav files, will a simple find in my workspace (pt le ) locate the wavs, then I can just drag them into a track?

For quick fast looping, I wouldn't reccomend PT.

On the PC, I'd check out Acid, Fruity loops, or Live.

Well, that sounds right, but I don't use ProTools, and I'm on a Mac.

Cary...I have always used a hardware drummachine with PTLE but I have one of the earlier versions with 001 on a Mac so I can't be of much help...

I'm a big believer in never upgrading a running system or if it ain't broke don't fix it...

but if you click on the link and goto the PT user conference you can ask the experts...the users themselves...its a great fourm...

with loops you gonna have to find programs that are not only RTAS compatable but also compatable with your computer format and PT software version...not everything works with everything...

I'm a bit unsure about the idea that loops have to be RTAS compatable.

I'm not a protools guy, although I did own a MBox for a while.

But I think loops are not part of the RTAS issue.

No disrespect meant...

My bruthas, hehe
Thanks for the input. Gil, I checked discrete drums, seems to be the highest quality loops in 24 bit. THey sound great, and there are many to choose from, which package do you recommend buying? Is acid or fruity loops, capable of making there own drum sounds? What if I just want to make a small guitar loop or recording of bizarre stuff: like my car tires squealing- my mbox2 and a mic should be able to handle that, right?

Gil no dispect taken I'm still learning this program after years of owning it...I think there are workarounds for non-RTAS loop programs where you can import them into a PT session and then line up the timing via midi..

but if you want your loops avaliable as a drop down from the PT menu inside your session I think the loop programs need to be RTAS compatable...

Well, here's the thing.

Discrette Drums is NOT easy to deal with.
I think loops in general are kind of a pain.
Assembling a drum track with loops is a lot harder than it seems.

So I've been looking at things like BFD and Drumkits from Hell.
And you already have BFD lite.

I would look at this first:

http://www.drumcore.com/

And explore BFD lite a bit more.

As far as Discrete Drums goes, I've got series one.
It's HARD to use, to me at least.

The dream is, you can click, and John Bonham plays through your speakers.

That's a hard dream with loops.

Look at Drumcore would be my advise.

Gil, drumcore seems cool! About BFD, do you need a midi keyboard to use it? I have no idea how to even get started on it. Can you tell me a little?

I don't own BFD so I'm not sure on details.

But BFD has midi files that you can put into PT to build drum tracks, and those midi files play the sounds in BFD.

I'd go check out the BFD website.

gil, bfd website sucks... anyway on a fun note:

Check this out, pretty funny stuff. I found recorded explosions, and some techno loops and made this:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=516588

Funny, doing it taught myself how to do some fades, TCE, eq in protools
