Howdy!
I think I know what my definitive answer is. I saw Wilco three times this past weekend. Once up in Dallas at the Granada Theatre, and twice in Austin... Once at Stubb's and once at the Austin City Limits Festival. Between these three shows, I discovered something... Nels. Cline. Is. A. God. I have never been more inspired by a performance in my entire life. The man is an absolute genius. He's done the impossible for me: He's made me want to get into jazz playing. He goes about his playing in such an avant-garde way... Flailing his Jazzmaster with an egg beater one second, and delicately picking a progression the next... So who has inspired you guys? What one guitarist has blown your socks off and made you want to spend 24 hours a day with a guitar in your hands? Oh. To those who have been watching me post for a while, I'm tired of the ellipses. Periods now! No more "..." -Dave Nailling |

I saw Zappa twice, once at Boston U in a gymnasium with a very young Steve Vai. In my 40 years, I've never seen anyone come close to Zappa on those 2 occasions. BTW, I really dug those first 3 Wilco albums, but didn't dig Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Do they have a new one? How is it?

Let's get to the point. If you didn't like "YHF," you DEFINITELY won't like "A Ghost Is Born..." That being said, I can't understand how anybody can't like "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Good lord, man. What the hell is wrong with you?! -Dave Nailling |

I just saw Nels and Wilco at Stubb's and holy jeez...I can't agree more with you! The man was absolutely incendiary. Did you happen to see his pedals much? I don't think I've ever wanted a Jazzmaster more in my life than now.

Heh. www.nelscline.com It's all there, friend. Well, with the exception of a Korg Kaoss Pad on his roadcase right next to his original Electro Harmonix 16-Second Digital Delay. Those were the two boxes he was messing around constantly. My lord. He was so amazing. -Dave Nailling |

quote: ...Well, I used to go see Uncle Tupelo at TT's and The Middle East in Boston, and I liked them more than Wilco or Son Volt. As far as the writing goes, Jeff Tweedy has moved away from the Rootsy-Folksy a little more with each album. With each release, he has moved more towards a spacey, ethereal sound. To my ears, on YHF, Tweedy was more interested in grooves, microphone placement techniques and effects than previously. IMHO his best songwriting was on Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne. I like the rootsy stuff. "A good composer does not imitate; he steals." Igor Stravinsky |

quote: Hell yes!!! Sing it, brother! I've gotten to see Nels several times -- with the Nels Cline Singers, The Scott Amendola Band, and Carla Bouzlich, and in every single venue he was phenomenal. The latest live show I've seen that's been overly inspiring was the Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum show on Friday. Karla Kihlstedt (who has played with Nels Cline) is such a hottie! Ane one hell of a violinist! |

I've seen Kenny Wayne live twice, he is REALLY good, not too mention he's a whole helluva lot of fun to watch. Plus, Double Trouble was there both times too |

I have seen quite a few great live performances in my nearly 47 years. Live performances - even those that are not the greatest - always inspire me. I just dig live music.
But the one that was the MOST inspirational, occurred on live television on February 9th, 1964 - The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. A mighty big impression was made on this 6 year old lad and my first guitar was not long to follow.... "I've spent most of my money on booze, women and guitar gear. The rest I've just wasted." |

Todd Rundgren. I've seen him 15 or 20 times, and he plays every show like it's his last.
I'd also agree about Tuck Andress. A couple of years ago, I played bass in P-Nut's (the bass player from 311) wedding ceremony. We did Marley's "Is this Love?" and two or three other tunes. Anyway, the bride had requested a particular Tuck and Patti song (I don't remember the name) that was too "out there" for the guitar player to figure out (he was a straight blues and r&r player), so knowing I had a jazz guitar background, he asked me to do it. Oh, man, what a difficult piece! It was very nerve-racking to play all these four-fret stretch altered chords unaccompanied, with all the guys in 311 (acting as groomsmen) watching. To make things worse, a big bug landed on the neck (2nd fret) during the song and wouldn't leave (the ceremony was outside at a local plantation). And just before the song, a small green snake dropped from the tree above to just behind the girl who was going to sing the Patti part. I whispered, "Verna! Don't freak out, but there's a snake by your foot!" Needless to say, she kind of freaked out. She didn't make a scene or anything, but she got flustered enough to screw up the verses in the song--a song which, at best, had me white-knuckled and tooth-gritted. Damn you, Tuck! ------------------------------ 2 Kings 2:23-24 NKJV: And as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths." |

Tone Dog--when's your birthday, man? I'm 46 too! (May 25, 1958)

I got turned on to EJ at an early age thanks to my guitar teacher. Getting to see EJ in a small, quaint setting while still in my teens haunts me to this day. Total authority over the instrument. Also early on, Steve Morse would come thru town and play at Congress St. Station in Savannah GA about every 3 to 5 months (this was before he joined D.P.)--he'd just mow the place down! Practically a free guitar lesson..
Others that fired me up: Tinsley Ellis, Derek St. Holmes, Ty Tabor (King's X)--side note--King's X came thru twice and I still can't describe it--a religious experience. Warren Haynes with Gov't Mule and the Allmans Damn--I'm a pretty lucky guy to have caught all that! |

Geez, Tone Dog, I don't know if I should be associating with someone of your advanced age. It could hamper my "cool" factor.
Actually, the only birthday that ever bothered me was 26. I filled out a survey that week that asked me to check a box with my age group: 18-25, or 26-40. I realized I'd shifted to a new demographic.
