I'm looking to finally buy a great Delay pedal. I've tried the Boss DD2, DD3, DD5 & DD6 as well as the Digitech Digidelay and the Ibanez 5, 9, and 10 series and the SIB Mr. Echo Red Face. I haven't been completely happy with any of them.

I want to buy a boutique Delay pedal for around $250.00 (new or used); here's the prerequisites:

*Must be true-bypass
*Repeats must not be tinny, dull, or digital-sounding
*Tap tempo is a BIG plus
*Repeats must be clean sounding(unlike Mr. Echo)
*Must have at least 500ms of delay time
*Must not be huge(5 1/2"w x 4 1/2"l max)

I'm considering the SIB Echodrive, The DLS Echo Tap, the T-Rex replica, Guyatone Flip Tube Echo, Maxon AD900 or 999 (used), but anything you can recommend would be helpful.

Let me know what you think, thanks

I just picked up a DLS EchoTap used for $250 and so far so good. It's very nice having two echos and the tap tempo makes it a real winner.

Another vote for the DLS. I've had the DLS echo tap for about 3 or 4 months now and I'm totally happy with it. I love the tap function.

The Echodrive is great, and the analog one is even better if you can find one. But it is a BIG pedal.

You'll be hard pressed to find a maxon ad900 or 999 less than 350 I think. I'd ignore the guyatone, i had high hopes for it as well, but when i plugged it in i was really really disappointed. It's very digital sounding, even with the analog controls. It sounds like an md-3, which is great for $99, not for 250. I've played a friends DLS and it was really sweet, although ultimately i went for an ad900.

Yeah, but there's no effect on the tone when bypassed. I'm insane about that stuff. But also, the tone of the ad900 is a think of pure beauty. It's an amazing little box. I never really loved delay until i got this pedal.

Yeah, the AD80 has served me well too, for longer than any other pedal I (still) have...

I think I'm the lone voice around here on this one but the Analogman modded DD-6 with hi-cut switch is really fantastic sounding, it's under $200 and meets all of your criteria-

The AD-900 sounds interesting - I wonder what circuit it's based on? Can someone here tell me what chips are inside the pedal (besides 2xMN3005 or 4xMN3008)?

Thanks for the info, I'll have to keep my eyes open for a DLS o a Maxon.

Big DD20 fan here. It doesn't sound digital to these ears.

You are not alone!! I have an Analogman modded DD3 which I LOVE.

Both the DD3 and DD6 meet all of your criteria except true bypass, and my DD3 isn't a tone sucker that I can hear.

If you want pure sweet delay tone of the gods with no frills, the AD900 is tough to beat. If you want lots of functionality and versatility also with great delay tones, check out the DD-20. Sorry no experience with the others...
