Won by the favorite Big Brown. Eight Belles, a filly, ran her heart out and finished 2nd. Unfortunately she ran herself to death, or I should say her jockey did, however inadvertantly. She snapped both front ankles and collapsed on the track. She was in terrible pain, so they euthanized her immediately right there. Of course they couldn't help but show it on TV, but they did load her carcass rapidly and rush her away. Like the man said when awarding the winners trophy, "It's a great day in the Commonwealth of Kentucky." Not one of the commentators for the rest of the telecast had the decency to mention Eight Belles again once, or perhaps suggest they felt bad. She did run her heart out though and won some money for the owners and bettors...
