The problem is most humbuckers when tapped have a coil that is much smaller than a standard single coil pickup.

The hotter the humbucker the greater the number of windings usually.

The Pearly Gates Plus is a decent sounding pickup but when tapped it will yield a fairly weak single coil sound.

You may consider using a series/parallel wiring instead of tapping the coils. That's what I do and I get really good results from it.

what about mini-humbuckers? are they any good? I'm thinking of those ones you can cram right into your strat pickguard

I want a single coil sound without all the gay noise, plus a little extra meat to push tube amps

Well my friend...if you are looking for single coil spaced humbuckers, look no further than the Dimarzio Fast Track 2.

I have one in my Tele with a series/parallel switch and I can get stock Tele sound with no noise and with the flick of a switch get pretty high output humbucking tone that will slam a pushed clean channel into overdrive without a pedal if I hit it hard enough. It has more output than most full sized humbuckers.

If you have a strat, put the Fast Track 2 in the bridge and put Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Solo pickups in the neck and middle positions...no noise and you get a pretty fat single coil sound.

The Seymour Duncan Mini '59 is also good for the neck and middle positions if you are looking for more of a sweet humbucker tone.

what do you mean by wiring them in series/parallel?

see, I'm going to order a pickgaurd with only the pup holes cut, and do custom wiring

I'm going to have a small toggle switch to select either the bridge or neck pos and and on/off switch for the middle pickup

this way I can turn on the middle pickup quickly no matter what position the neck/bridge and isolate it, and I'll be out of the way so there's no accidental swtiching

I don't like the quack positions...they seem like a big ol' gimmick to me

hmm.....the mini 59' seems a little muddy to me...I really like the sound of the classic strat stack.....is the output lower than that of a regualr strat pcikup?
