Hi, Not sure where i should post this question. I am novice when it comes to recording and have no plans to do real professional recordings but definently want to get my feet wet and invest in something i'll keep for a long time...also like portability. Am considering the roland 1680 (around 800$ on ebay) or a zoom 1044 with the cd burner and 40 gig (1100$-new). My impressions are that the roland has a steeper/less friendly leaning curve which i won't want to deal with when being spontaneous. (will need to add on a cd burner and a larger hard drive). But has all the best software... The zoom may not be as good in long run for fine tuning some recordings down the road?? Appreciate any advice one can send my way. Thanks.

If you are into advanced editing and expansion, I would recommend a computer based system. How important is portability? The smaller Digital Workstations do have their pros but, they are not as universal as computers (PC or Mac) when it comes to swapping parts, ie, HDs. Also, you are forced to view the editor in a tiny LCD display, which kind of sucks. However if you just want to lay down tracks as quickly as possible with the least amount of editing, using a relatively simple setup, then the Roland is probably your best bet. I don't know too much about the Zoom.
hi..i have just purchased a Roland CDX-1 which is in my opinion the cat's ass for VR studios! easy to use, cd audio record capability, onboard effects, 8 tracks, direct in for guitars, bass, mic, COSM effects. I also use it as an effect patch for guitar or vocals whwn no recording. check it out at Roland .com...I'm in Canada and i paid $1899 plus taxes..around $2000 cdn...good luck in your search!!
Thanks, i bought a roland 1680 off ebay (with one effects card) for $880. It's not the most intuitive recorder but not too bad to work with. Think it will be ok. Looking at getting a bigger hd to go into it...it will recognize up to 15gig. On ebay there are people packaging/ selling 'roland approved' 18 or 20gig hard drives and selling them for close to $200...I called roland and they listed me tested ones that work. So for around $50-60, on ebay, one can buy a 12 gig...not 15, but cheaper. If i new more about hd's then i'd probably figure out which 18 and 20 gig drives work and pay only around $100. I just tought i'd mention that in case someone could use that info.
