The GTO actually sounds pretty good and it would be my first choice if I couldn't have a Valve Grinder.

The Mesa units aren't that great.

maybe get the usually under priced Westbury 12ax7 distortion box, or a chandler or even a early 80's nady...all with your beloved pre-amp distortion...seems if it has a preamp tube in it...well....you know what ya want.
