Which model Marshall heads do you two have? I'm doing a build up of one. I just started. I'm using my ol Crate head as a donor. Could you guys do me a huge solid? Could you take the amp out of the head and take some close up pics of the electronics so that I might use them as a reference? Is that possible? I'd like pics that really show the colors of the resistors if that's cool. Please!!!!

I have a Marshall 2204 50 watt modded with and extra gain stage. My amp is the PC version not the PTP.I had both and liked my modded amp better.I'll ask the guys at the amp forum for some picks. They'll probally help.

Are you sure there are any 2203s or 2204s that are PTP? I was under the impression that Marshall switched to PC board before they started manufacturing these models. Much earlier than Fender.

The JCM's with the Vertical inputs are PTP aren't they ? The horizonal are PC.

Nope - the vertical inputs have leads to the PC board while the horizontal inputs are directly soldered to the board. Because of this the models with horizontal inputs are more likely to have problems with the inputs from stress at the solder point.
Luckily I haven't had any problems with mine!
Here's a picture from the site the guy on HC linked to that shows the vertical inputs with leads to the PC board:

Thanks a ton Idy. I got some very useful info from those posts. I like the modded ones at the tone lounge. They seem to be chasing the same beast that I am.
I've thought about getting rid of the "bright cap". I mentioned it to a tech who told me, "No way, that's where the Marshall crunch comes from!" When I use my G&L through the Marshall's gain channel, I have to turn both the treble and presence to zero and the mid to two or three.

There's a ton of info here Saline, but I think it answers your question.
The only mod I would really want to try is the simple bright cap removal. If'n I could even reliably use a soldering iron, I would try it out. Ty can tell you about my pathetic attempt at a simple Phase 90 mod...
As it is, the amp sound fine flat with my SG and only requires some radical EQing with my G&L.

Well, in'n you get curious enough, I'd just get yourself a tech and let him solder it it place. Just to try, ya know? If'n you don't like it. Have him (or her) solder the ol' one back. I just talked this tech here at work into helpin me with this little project. But he only wants to do p2p so my amp might end up being just that. Which is still really cool, I just wanted some added features that he said would be too cost prohibitive. Oh well.

I could have done it in the past but the last tech who I had modify a couple of my amps talked me out of it, as I mentioned above. The "bright cap" mod I could easily do myself (it only consists of snipping the cap out), but I would have to have a tech solder it back in if'n I didn't like the sound. I may just do this once I have a job again (I have some work I'd like done on three of my other amps, though, once I have the money).

Money!!!! That's the reason I'm doin this. I'd rather build my own with new parts than buy an old one with ol' parts. The cost wont be much different but atleast the parts will be new.
