to 'get' the Rory thing.
I seem to be unable. I took home a friend's 'Irish Tour' CD, and came away thinking he and his band were not really much better sounding than a quality blues bar band after you've had a pint or two of Fat Tire Ale. I know he's an Irish hero, and he's now dead, and yes, he was a much beloved bloke...but, while I WANT to think the world of the guy's playing, I note these troubling things about his craft... (utterly subjective dribble follows..) the guy is sloppy as shit, often outright screwing up like he's drunk.. pretty good 'live' recorded guitar tone, but not grail-ish at ALL!... his singing is often so terribly mic'd on live recordings, that it is a problem... I wonder where his playing tension is?...plunk plunk plunk... he plays kinda slo-pokey ALOT, with 'nary a floray' into velocitatious techniqie... I am sure his live shows were a blast (not IRA blast...) as he had exceptional hair and vigorous sweating capabilities (the Irishman's shower!) didn't the Stones want this guy after Jones was drowned by Mick and Keith?..or was he the post Taylor-pre Woods request?... please explain the 'Rory' thing... (you dont see people jumping up and down for Freddy King, and he was 5 times the player that Rory ever was, and he sang way better.. some like chicken, some like McChicken... Rory is the McChicken of dead blues guitarists. |

Rory's popularity (not at all unlike that of Jimmy Page) is due to the fact that he played with a GREAT DRUMMER - Rod D'Ath. Put a sloppy guitarist in front of a tight drummer, and the resulting "tension" is sublime.* And the guitarist will always get all the credit.
Hell, even Ed Phobes sounds like a decent guitarist when I play with him. You know it's true. --------------- * that's why Dream Theatre sucks, they are all WAY too tight, and I do mean anally. SquidBoy, you're my little man |

Well that's what appealed to me.He was the type of guitarist who played on the spot and went for it.Sometimes you get more feeling out that way.Personally I think he was great...mistakes and all.Because you take the humanity out of music then what do you have? Just my 2 cents.

I met Rory numerous times in my travels. He was a genuine guy and anyone who says he couldn't play is a shithead. Looks like there are shitheads here.
