They *did* make their border airtight (or tried to) - but the German's came through Belgium. Note also that the Germans had just devoted their economy and confiscated everything possible to building a war machine. France somehow avoided taking everyone' money, shooting hose who disagreed, and spending it all on tanks.

Note that the united states seemed to think it was just OK until *their* harbour got bombed by the Japanese. Germany had already re-annexed the very productive Rheinland from France, and the US pressured France not to re-invade.

The French did actually fight for their country, but most of Europe was under axis control by the time they got invaded. The British army had to retreat from France, and that was that.

Funny how no one blames Nazi Germany, rather than France, who have nothing to apologize for.

France's policy after the war has been heavily militaristic - they have a big, modern airforce - likely the best in Europe, and a large nuclear arsenal. They are perhaps one of the few nations justified in having nukes, based on their recent history.
