those are nice...I have one. extremely versatile and..damn, exzcellent for just toting to a place and recording on site...
I used to record everything on cassettes, then transfer it to my HD...but I switched to direct when I got a good soundcard, and frankly, I dont miss the hiss that came with the Tascam...I also found the imputs to be...somewhat constrained by volume issues resulting in easily screwewd up sound (least, I blame the imputs)...though that has been since rectified by a diff. mixer board...
I really like the 424 though...it's a wonderful tool and it works really well, and I loved the tape speed control/pitch...I used to always slow **** down or speed up...covered some of my terribleness...some.
Oh, I always mixed down 'within' the 424..bouncing 2-3 tracks to one track, then adding more tracks if I wanted...but I must say, I really really seldom ever have done more than 4 traxs mixdown on the 424...did it come with a manual? I think they REALLY help...the player takes a weird power supply too....

I just read on Home Recording.com that you
could use a minidisk player/recorder for
mixdown? Anyone tried this?
Well, you can use anything you can record onto for "mixdown". But if you want to put it on your computer (which you will) so that you can normalize and stuff, unless you have outboard mastering stuff (which you don't), and upload so we can hear (which you have to), you might as well just mix down to your computer instead of going to MD and then to computer.

I agree completely with the CN.....if you cant access your soundcard on your pc because it is a cruddy soundcard...then invest the 30-170 bucks for a card with AV imput capability...JL uses an inexpensive Sound Blaster with great results...he might be able to steer you to some inexpensive EBay cards?...but getting it to your PC is a given manditory...cause you will eventually wanna do **** to the music...cool edit, sound forge, pro tools, cubase...imo
MD just seems worthless to mix down to. You're eventually gonna have to take it off the MD and put it on something else, and the computer seems like the logical place to go, so you can upload to us, burn CDs or whatever.

I wanted to try cassette to see what Analog
Vs Digital recordings sounded like to me.
Alot of times I like low tech stuff because it
sounds more warm with more character.
Sometimes overdriving a tape deck sounds good. Of course, there are plugins that will give you that warm characterous sounds you so crave. Steinberg makes and excellent tape saturation plugin, or at least they used to. It was called magneto. I'd always use it on my master output chain and drive everything to like +2.
