Richard's Wild Irish Rose
Another favorite seller in inner-city outlets and other places serving a low-income alcoholic clientele, Wild Irish Rose was immortalized in song by Neil Diamond. Diamond wrote Cracklin' Rosie to describe the relationship of an alcoholic to his wine, after a trip to an Indian reservation in Canada in 1970, where he saw the damage caused by cheap fortified wine sold to low income alcoholics. On the reservation, there were many more men than women, so on Saturday nights, those men left without a date made the wine their "woman for the night." "Cracklin' Rosie, make me a smile God if it lasts for an hour, that's alright We got all night To set the world right Find us a dream that don't ask no questions, yeah Oh, I love my Rosie child You got the way to make me happy You and me, we go in style Cracklin Rose, you're a store-bought woman You make me sing like a guitar hummin' So hang on to me, girl Our song keeps runnin' on..." |
