Sound Forge lets you adjust the mp3 settings and CE dont!
inconcievable!wtf? (yeah tickboy -- DO NOT RECORD SO HOT HOT HOT!!!) I just started with SF yesterday, but I thought it looked pretty cool actually...less busy looking for sure....or am I really just wastin' time till Pro Tools squashes them all? on a different note...WITHOUT the use of a mic preamp...anyone have a good way to boost the output of a mic'd acoustic other than boosting db's at the software level (post recording)? (tryin' to dim the..'thinness' quotient maybe use two mics? (kinda crowded around me hand I dont use acoustics much, so I dont wanna just buy a frickin' preamp for that...I have to save for George L cables AND a $65 VL Micro-Vibe pedal (NIB) any ideas appreciated. thanks O- |

SF is not a multi tracker. CE is, as far as I remember.
SF will be used for a long time, methinks, unless its new owners, SONY, decide to kill it. We'll see. It's very useful for single a stereo track editing in ways that almost no sequencing program is. Pro Tools won't ever fully kill off the Cubase/Logic/CE crowd just because Pro Tools is, well, pro. Us cheapos and amateurs need something too! Doesn't your soundcard have a mic input? Or a stereo with a kareoke input? I say if you're recording at all, you should have at least one preamp layin' around, right? Am I right? Are we gonna split hair here? How are you micing your amps/voice/etc now without a preamp? |

MusicMatch Jukebox lets you change the bit rate when Converting Waves into MP3's. Musicmatch s free. I don't know much at all about Soundforge.
I also can't help with the Mic problem. My best guess is to layer the shit out of your vocals and increase the DB's after adding effects. But most likely (bad news coming so duck!!) you will need a pre-amp for that mic. I used to try and do what your doing but gave up after about a year of trying. You can't make good pancakes withuot a good recipe!!!!! |

quote: I didnt know SF was not a multi-track recorder. I record me guitar noises off a mic into a recorder/mixer (portastudio 424) where I EQ it to some degree, then into my Sound Card via rca jacks...no preamps as such. I havent been recording with the Tascam, just using it's EQ/patch to monitor abilities... Vocals are done straight from mic>portastudio>pc... acoustic guitar is mic'd directly, like vocals. I EQ them at the portastudio some, but they are pretty thin and reedy sounding unless I am doin alot of rhythm stuff, but still...it's lacking. the soundcard has rca or midi jacks...not reasonable, or desired to record past the tascam, in my opinion.. thanks Chris |

Sonic Foundry/Sony did have a multitracker... Vegas, I think. It had a lot video stuff in it. I remember mixing one song down with it and think that it was kinda neat.
So... you don't record on the PS? You just run mic through it... so the PS has a mic pre then. So is the problem that the PS sounds to thin or is not boosting the signal enough? |

I do my multitracking in CE Pro, then save a mixdown to .wav format. It's true that SF doesn't do multi-tracking
I do my mastering in either SF or CE, depending on what I want to do |

quote: portaStudio is more a mixer board/analog recorder - not a pre-amp or pre-ampish in capabilities Ed is prolly right (as usual) -- he keeps telling me: 'you are tryin to fry bacon in a paper frier pan..no wonder your bacon is all wet and terrible' maybe if I use a large funnel to direct the sound to the mic? |
