I can put my drums there and play them without those fucking rubber soundn off pads that I hate so goddamn much
I can invite other musicians to play with me
I can record in an environment that is not an apartment that is located on a road that either has a)54,000 cars a day go by or b)massive construction
I can move into a smaller apartment. My music stuff is the majority of what I own
CON:
My studio is not at my house. I am sacrificing a li'l convenience here, but not much. The practice space is about 5 miles from my house, and it's on the bike path. Also, I still have a car, as much as I hate to use it.
More money. But I can afford it, especially if I get a smaller apartment. In fact, if I have a nice practice area, I don't care much about my apartment. It needs a couch, a kitchen, and a computer.
The convenience thing manifests itself in various ways. Right now I can start recording 4 cassettes at about any time and let it run until they're done. So I can start a set when I leave for work, or before I go out somewhere. I wouldn't quite be able to do that there, unless I kept my recording gear at home and just put my drums and... drums out there.
Opinions?

Why not look for a slightly bigger place that has room for a nice studio? Maybe an older house with a basement? I'll bet of you took the studio $$ and the ap[artment $$ and combined them, you could find a great place that could do both.
please don't holler at me for making a suggestion.
No, I wouldn't. It's a good suggestion, one that I have already considered, but most landlords are not willing to go for it. I can't find a house that only has one rental unit that is less than 3 bedrooms and is in the part of town I want to live in, though. Even then, if I am in the basement making noise (most of the houses around here have damp, nasty basements), and somebody is living on the 3rd floor, there is the possibility that they (or the neighbors next door) would call the cops. I would only do this if I could be gauranteed the right to play loudly fairly frequently, which the practice space people can do. If I got an expensive place and then was, after some period of time, not allowed to play music, I would be severely pissed off.
But, I am still looking. I have a 5 page list of landlords to call today when I get home. We'll see how it goes.

The laws here, and in Gainesville, were like this: you can make noise 'till 10pm. After that, the cops can cite you with no complaint. Before that, if someone complains, they can cite you at any time, which is ridiculous because it could lead to people being cited for construction work, home improvements, and all sorts of ridiculous thing.
Also, Smokes, I'm livin' in Wisconsin now. Have been for about 10 months.

New development: I might get a house with my sis and our friend Scott. This would solve all problems, be cheaper, and give me company. All good things, these.

I went and checked out a practice space today. It was acutally pretty nice. They had about 5 open right now, 3 of which have restricted hours (7:45pm - 7:30am). The nice unrestricted one was prolly about 12'x14', had a sink (fucking luxury, jesus), and cost $210 a month. They're looking for a year lease and subletting would cost me $100, plus the subletters would have to be approved by them. It looked pretty nice, the electrical didn't seem like it'd be a big deal. They even have bathrooms and a smoking room.
I'm almost tempted to just do it, but I know that's a bad idea. I still have to think this through and talk with my sis and our pal to see if we 3 will live together. Of course, that's a whole other set of shit to deal with... we'd have to find a place that allows dogs and is in the neighborhood I want to live in and Scott has to decide if he's gonna continue working in Madison or get a motorcycle and take off and blah blah blah.
But I want this space! It's nice!
