that I may well get a randall rm-50 someday...

the egantor designed preamp modules are an idea that I think is valid and compelling...once they workout some of the little bugs, I may well get one...

imagine, switching from a fender tweed clean to a super lead, or a plexi to a vox...depending on what preamp module you have installed (only two per combo...head=3..) and the power tubes (2) are switchable between 6L6, kt88, el34's, 6550's and bias access is apparently very easily done...kinda like a foxrox toneshaper card for amp preamps!Big Grin

all kinds of additional features too (NO REVERB tho, kinda weak...and NO on-board effects (good))..but I havent played thru one...so, it's all bullocks till then, but...I'll say it...

I never thought a Randall might interest me... Smile

One of the worst sounding amps ever...The Plexi and Blackface modules are a total joke and sound and play nothing like the amps they are modeled after. Sure it sounds better than a POD but that's not exactly a high watermark. While I'm sure Egnater's dablings with Randall and Rocktron have made him some money he no longer makes amps at the same level of tonal and build quality that he used to. Basically he's pimping his name (which used to mean something) to anyone who will pay for it.

You might like it though. Check it out.

I was gonna mention this one - I've saw a couple of them at Guitar Center about 5 years or so ago.

Buck up little camper...I'm just pulling your leg...but on a serious note, that amp isn't all that it's cracked up to be. It would be cool if it was.

yeah Ty...I think the "concept" is a great idea...but this assumes that preamps largely determine the tonal 'character' of an amp, which may well be an equal fallacy...I dunno...

I just like the idea of 'modular' analog toneshaping tools...I imagine that this idea would take off and be more fully developed if the manufacturers weren't making SO much money moving into digital emulation technology...

chips are a lot cheaper to manufacture....
I wonder what one of those Vox AD series amp's cost for them to make?..the cab, speaker and power supply are the most expensive prolly..

someone once said...'you don't see anyone hanging on to 30 year old chip technology (well, aside from Ebonians), but damn, there are people who'd kill for a '72 super lead'... Razz

damn, trolled by Ty AND saline on the same day Mad

You know...if the modular approach has some appeal to you, you may want to check out a Marshall JMP-1 midi controlled tube preamp and either a Marshall or Mesa stereo tube power amp.

I used a JMP-1 for many years and was quite happy with the results. They sound pretty great...4 programable channels with 100 locations to store your favorite settings (I didn't use the 4th one too much as it was mainly a high gain thing, but it came in handy from time to time. It also has a programable series effects loop that I put a little half rack space BBE Sonic Maximizer in. It nearly doubled my tonal options.

I ran it into either the "power amp in" on a couple of Fender Twins, or a Mesa 50/50 or 2/90 stereo tube power amp. I ran that into either a 2x12 Fender stereo cab or 2 Mesa Celestion V-30 loaded cabs.

It's a pretty nice setup and you can find the units used very cheap...It's a little more expensive if you want to upgrade to the Mesa Triaxis, but I found that the Marshall JMP-1 did the job for a lot less money as the power section and the speakers made the most difference with that kind of rig.

Anyway...something to consider...for less than the cost of that Randall you can have a pretty decent rig with access to more sounds than you would probably ever need. A much better tonal option than modeling amps too.
