It would make you feel better to unload this heavy amp for something WAY more boutique.

Think Mesa Ty. Those amps were built as an IMPROVMENT on Marshall - go for it - we all know you want it! Cool

Don't be scared Ty. Say "No" to fear Ty.

Tell you what...I'll sell it to you for $3500.

Or you can buy my modded JCM2000 combo and 2x12 extension cab for only $1300. Smile

I don't know...I'm not at home. I believe it pre-dates diode clipping as it has the 6550 tubes in it.

Uh...Mesa's were built as an "improvement" on Fenders...since the Mark 1 was just a modded Fender Prinston and all.

But you prolly already knew that. Big Grin

Bleh. Oak you don't want a marshall with 6550's. EL34's only baby.

I'm sure it's a nice amp though.

Yeah...that's the common wisdom...but it sounds better than any EL-34 equipped Marshall I have ever played...and everyone else who's heard it has been pretty impressed by it.

If more people compared a properly set up Marshall JCM-800 with 6550's in it to one with EL-34's in it you would probably have more people reaching for the 6550's.

Of course the 6550 pretty much puts out what goes into it so if your preamp isn't sweet then you're screwed. 6550's sound more balanced across the entire frequency range than EL-34's do. It's like the difference between a Klon and a Tube Screamer in my opinion.

People have had it pounded into their heads by by people that really don't know any better that they automatically need to replace the 6550's in a Marshall when they find one that has them...hell I was one of them. When I first saw that it had 6550's in it, my immediate reaction was to have them replaced...until I plugged it in. Then I wondered what the fuck people were thinking.

I have since talked to several knowledgeable amp builders about it and they agree...the 6550 gets a bad rap because of the myth that gets spread by people who don't know what they are talking about...most who have never even heard a good 6550.

Bottom line...I have never heard a Marshall that sounds better than my JCM-800...it just sounds like a Marshall is supposed to. Up to this point the only other thing I have heard that has come close was the Plexi Reissue that I used to have...and it was nice, but not quite there.

There's a few amps that I own that will never leave my collection. My JCM-800 is one of them.

The others are my modded Blues Jr., the Hiwatt 2x12 combo and my Emery Sound amps...I may even add the Perkhiser to that list as I just put Webber Blue Bell and Webber Silver Bell alnico speakers in it. They resolved the issues I was having with the amp and it sounds killer now.

Okay man, I believe you. I have a preference for EL34's, they are my all time fav tube.

However, I am currently building a 20watt single ended amp head with a 6550. It will have a marshall preamp(the same one as on my el34 build), so I'll let you know the results of my experiment. I'm also building a cleaner preamp I can pop in here, this amp is gonna be my tone lab, I designed it so I can replace turret boards pretty easily. Smile

Rawk on.
