I suck at playing keyboard. I can play... uh... a simplified version of "The Entertainer" and a handful of other songs. I can't read music very well. I can't play anything complicated. I don't know chords or theory. The only way I can compose is to hum something over and over and then painstakingly try to figure it out on the keyboard.

I'm a mediocre drummer. My timing's alright, but I don't practice enough (insert myriad excuses here), I speed up or slow down too much on fills, and my style is too narrow. I get better with time, though, and I really love to do it.

I can compose a whole song, but it's a long long process that rarely comes to fruition. But I'm happy with the results when I "finish" something.

I think I need to get better at some technical things just so that the composition process is quicker... so that transcribing what I hear in my head is a more transparent process.

Being honest with your shortcomings is fine, but perhaps being equally honest with your blessings is fine too? Whenever I find that I am in a funk, and am beating myself up, I try to focus on the good things that bring me hope and upliftment. My musical sucesses are one of those things. It is true that all artists go through cycles of creativity and we also have different feelings about those cycles. I would just say that to not let the negatives you see so clearly now, keep you from the positives you know are still there. I wish you well, bro.
Peace Smile

I disagree. My most prolific period was when I was just making music by myself on my computer. Well, on my friend's computer. I didn't get my own for like a year after I started.
