my laptop seems functional it's not acting very nice. I tried to re-issue a change to my VM file but it's not taking. The puter tells me it's updated but then after my re-boot the allocation still reads 0mb's. Am I screwed? Should I burn all my stored music and pics then do a total re-install? Ah, bugger!!! Just when I was fiqureing out my compression shiat!!
What OS are you running? What kind of laptop do you have? (brand, cpu, memory)
Where are you changing the VM settings? Where are you getting the readings from? Is this all in system properties-->advanced-->performance options? What are you trying to achieve by changing your VM settings?
And when was the last time you did do a total re-install?
And you're talking compression like using a compressor (albeit a virtual one), right? Not some funky hard disk compression stuff, which is evil...

I'm using XP. I have a dell laptop Inpiron 2650. It has a 40g hard drive with 512 ram and a 2.1 ghz processor. I was attempting to change the VM (system properties-->advanced-->performance options) because that's what the puter told me to do. I've never messed with it before. I went to search for it (pagefile.sys)and the sytem can't find it. It's supposed to be on my C drive, but it's gone. Windows must have relocated it. I tried searching hidden files to no avail. I'm trying to achieve a regular boot up. Right now it boots up but with a couple of errors and a beep. Then when you go to shut it down, it just keeps looping back into start up. I don't know what happened. The compression was in Cool edit and had nothing to do with my system (music shiat). This laptop is about 6 months old and I've never done a complete re-install. But it looks like I'm going to have to do it now. I loaded WinDOCTOR yesterday and although it fixed a number of things it still didn't solve my problem. Hmmmm.....
One thing about the pagefile.sys file is that it's not just a normal hidden or invisible file... it's a super-secret hidden invisible system file. To see it in XP, you have to do more than just click "Show hidden files and folders" and a normal windows search won't find it, as far as I remember.
If you go to folder options (from Windows Explorer: View-->Folder Options-->View Tab) You'll see a box that sez "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)". If you already unchecked that box and you still can't see the pagefile.sys on your C:/, then things are definitely funny.
What did you change your setting to? And your computer told you to do this? In what manner did your computer tell you to do this?

Thanks, I'll check that. I was loading some sound editing programs and the computer kinda stalled, then shut down. When it re-booted itself, it gave me a message that said that there was a problem with my pagefile.sys and I needed to allocated more space to it or some shit's gonna go wrong. So, now, everytime I start the computer it gives me this message and wont let me click on my name to start windows. To start windows I have to cntrl-alt-delete, once, to start the OS. Once in, almost everything seems normal. Will re-loading the OS solve my problem? Thanks, Chris!!!! I changed my settings to 765 min, 1536 max. But it still reads 0mb allocated. Even if I when I shut down and restart.
