Mark uses a lot of different gear. But, his staples seem to be the "Classics". Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, Marshalls, and Fenders.
Maybe if you had a particular track that you liked, we could try and dissect it? "now i dream about tone, day dream about tone, think about tone at work, think about tone when im taking a dump, musiciansfriend and vintage guitar mag right next to the toilet....its getting weird" -BigRob |

The track in particular is greazy chicken. The tone is so fat and yet not muddy

Watching some YouTube videos of the tune, he was playing slide through a Strat.
I know that he really uses a Colorsound Tone Bender a lot, too. Looking into it, he apparently has had to sell off a lot of equipment, over the last couple of years. And, he's a grea whore, to boot! So, it may be hard to find out exactly what he used on that track. Here's a pedalboard pic from one of his solo gigs: http://www.rockandrollarmy.com/fotos/main.php/d/104543-1/IMG_7910_T.JPG Here's some pix from 5-18-07 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/gearitis/Marc%20...2007/MarcRedRev2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/gearitis/Marc%20...cWhiteRevnoflash.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/gearitis/Marc%20...arcBurstRevflash.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/gearitis/Marc%20...2007/MarcsPedals.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/gearitis/Marc%20...bTremolobrighter.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/gearitis/Marc%20...18%2007/MarcsAmp.jpg Basically, it sounds like a Strat through a Marshall. With a Tonebender, perhaps. Maybe we'll get more info from some other Forumites here. Okay, is it a LoneStar, or a LoneStar Special? And are you wanting to play at home, or a Band/Live situation? So, volume levels are part of what we have to factor in.
But, here's a starting place: The Mesa should be set to just-a-little-dirty when your Strat's Volume is at around 7 or 8. Rolling the Guitar's Volume up more when you need more Grit. But, you'll probably find the Tones a little thicker with the Guitar's Volume below it's Maximum "10" seting. Most of your Tone will be in your amp. Try boosting the Mids on the Mesa. This will help with the Slide Tones sounding Fat. Also, try a Boost of some sort. Maybe the ToneBender or a Beano Boost (Another MF favorite). If you don't have a Booster, then a low gain setting on an OD pedal should work okay for this. You may also want to run a light Compressor for the Slide parts. Its a lonestar classic. Relative to the mids where should the bass and treble be set

I'd set the Bass at Noon or lower, for a start. And the Treble? Turn it up, until it seems to be a little sharp and thin. Just to the beginnings of annoying. Now, use your Guitar's Tone Knob to roll off the Highs until they sound Fat and Smooth.

That and a slight mid boost is my jazz tone basically, but I could see that not working well when you want to add some drive peds.. |

Yeah, I'm thinking a little Compression and a lot of Mids, will help with a fatter Slide Tone.

In the process of trying to get his tone i found my unique tone. Its with my mesa running with KT77 tubes. It gets that warm round tone with a plesent amount of mids

Well, even better! I'm glad you found something that feels like "You". Always remember: *"WWJBD".
*What Would Jeff Beck Do? Seriously though, that's great! So, now the BIG question......... What will you do with your new sound? That's the tough one, for me anyways. I look forward to hearing what your muse will be leading you into. See you on the Forum! Happy Hunting!
