At the end of the song Paranoid Android the guitar player Plays a lead that has some crazy effect on it. Just wondering how he did this?

If you're talking about the last solo, it's an Electro Harmonix small stone phaser. Great song, great guitarist, great band.

I actually read several places that the effect in question is a rackmount called the Mutronics Mutator. It is some sort of analog synthesque device with a bunch of knobs, two LFO's and two Envelope filters. Anyway, he played the guitar solo without the effect and then ran it through the effect while turning some knobs to make it sound crazy.

A friend of mine is a huge fan and he says live, the guitarist uses a Lovetone Meatball which is a suped up Mutron III, filtering type effect. I'm pretty sure you can buy it here at musictoyz. Actually the guitarist from what I remember has a ton of Lovetone effects on his pedalboard.

I'm pretty sure he didn't start using lovetone until very recently. Believe me, it's a small stone. My band plays this song live and the small stone with the color off nails it.

that was a little too definitive of a reply. Who knows. It's probably a drowning muskrat.

Yes, i've heard people say that the Small Stone works for the ending solo for Paranoid Android. Live he either uses that or the DOD envelope filter he uses(Ed O'Brien, the other guitarist, uses the Meatball). But on record he definitely uses the Mutronics Mutator- I've seen this at other forums and sites that have info from his tech and stuff: http://www.jonnygreenwood.net/equipment/ OR http://www.greenplastic.com/gear/jonny.html
They both have the setup of Jonny and the songs he uses each pedal on. Greenplastic also has the setups of the rest of the band.

Are drowning muskrats true bypass?

Hey FloydianAnimal, What other sites do you know of (besides virtualguitarmag) that show the pros rigs/gear ect. Thanx a million.

http://www.guitargeek.com is a good one to go to. Just keep in mind the setups aren't always one hundred percent accurate but the have alot- Clapton, Hendrix, Vai, Satch, Brian May, Tom Morello, etc. Also, to find the links I listed above I just used Google. On the search I just go band+name+gear+setup or guitarist+name+gear+setup. I've found setups for Hammett and Robert Fripp and for Pink Floyd. Also, some pedal sites like this one and analogman have setups of a few people. Hope that helps.

for the album, he recorded the solo, then fed the recorded signal through the mutator and manipulated the knobs.
live, i believe it is played with an envelope filter. ed (the other guitar player) is the one with the meatball, and i'm not sure if jonny has one or if he uses a different filter.

he used the mutator but ran the solo through the machine tiwce, so when maiplulated some parts sound like the they reversed the envelope (perhaps?) and some parts dont
