you're not kidding. I saw him about two years ago and was blown away. I'd have to say that is the result of major chops and pure skill.

Derek uses a TS-808 Tubescreamer into a '65 Blackface Super Reverb. I can't exactly rememer what guitar he uses though. I think he maybe using PRS nowadays, but I'm not sure.
The guitars he uses are Washburn, Gibson SG and PRS.

Troy, how do you know that Derek Trucks uses a TS-808? I heard from quite a few people recently and read somewhere that he just plugs his Giboson SG straight into a 64 Super Reverb and cranks the amp up to 9 or 10. Have you seen him using a tubescreamer or read that anywhere? Thanks, Scott

sgtones1, I believe I read it somewhere. I could be wrong however, I do believe that is what it said as a part of his setup. www.troytbluestrio.com

I have done lighting for his band, when I worked the show the only thing he had between his guitar, a washburn, and his amp(super reverb) was his cable.

Yeah, when I saw him in Knoxville, it was just Derek-->guitar-->amp.

I heard he has Pyle Speakers in his Super Reverb, is that true? I just have never heard a Super Reverb sound like that. Almost Marshall like!

He is awesome! I opened up for him in Colorado a few years back, and his tone and phrasing were incredible! I think he was only like 20 yrs. old, if that! I can tell you that standing right next to his Super cranked up is a big part of the tone. Another HUGE part of his tone is his attack with his right hand index finger. I don't recall him using any pedals at all, and he was using a custom Washburn with humbuckers.
I saw him live and he plugged straight into the super with it cranked. I think I heard somewhere he uses car stereo speakers or something "unorthodox" like that too.
With his band he uses his Washburn or an SG straight into his Super. With ABB he runs straight into a Randall all tube head into a 4x12. The last few times I saw him with the ABB he also had a old Style Marshall on a second 4x12. He was plugged into both amps and on top of the Marshall was a Tube Screamer. My theory, though I've never read this anywhere, is that he using the Tubescreamer to goose the Marshall a little to match the gain level he getting out of the Randall. One other note, in listening to both Derek and Warren's amps straight off stage, Warren's definitley had the nicer, rounder tone, but Derek's sound just jumped out of the mix through the PA.

According to an article I just read (On Stage mag I believe) its just guitar to Super Reverb. The speakers are Pyle Drivers - purchased from a Car Stereo shop out of desperation on a Sunday after he blew the Fender Speakers on a Sat night gig. He liked them so much that he refuses to swap them out.

Well from what I recently read in an interview in GW, he uses his Washburn for solo gigs with his fender no pedals. With the ABB he uses the SG into a Marshall halfstack no pedals also.

Washburn or SG into SR for solostuff, and Washburn and SG into SR and Marshall Plexi RI with a (Analogman?) TS9 for the ABB. That's what I read in Guitar Player.

i can't believe anybody would use pyle's.during the mid 80's i was living & playing fulltime in va. beach, & i blew the speakers in my 64super rev. back then nobody carried 10"s, & all i could find were pyles.they sucked!my amp sounded like crap.i had to retire it until 1990,when i shipped it to kendrick who "tuned" it up, & put in their black-frame 10"s.but those pyles...what a horrible memory!
