I don't know if they are many Bolin fans out there, but I'm wondering what kind of Phaser he used? It sounds like one anyways.....He would get these F**ked up spacey ray gun sounds? What the hell is that?
I have no idea what phaser he used but I really dig his Teaser album!! Didn't like Private Eyes nearly as much though.....but Teaser is the shit. Savannah Woman is one of my favorite solos!!
So funky I can smell it!

Thanks Twang! I knew about the Hiwatts and Fuzztone, but couldn't put my finger on the phaser. It doesn't sound like a phase 90 or anything. Really cool effect.
after you got me thinking of tommy bolin, yesterday i dug out a vhs a friend made me of a denver tv special about him & the release of the ultimate box-set.alot of cool footage,& although i couldn't see the phaser,he kept his echoplex on a stand & messed with it alot. i think alot of the whooshing is him manipulating the plex. he was only 25 when he od'd...i forgot how young he was.just think how good he would have got,had he lived! i think i have a vhs of him in japan w/ purple.i'll find it & watch it,if they show his phaser,i'll describe for you.

Cool thing Twang! I found that 1988 guitar article you mentioned, and it did state that he used to plex to manipulate the delay. I think he would mess around with the bar. Really cool!
Hey I was a manager at a very popular music store in Warwick, RI and a friend of Tom Bolin's a studio musician from NY was one of my big customers and he had Tom's original Maestro Phase Shifter. We bought it for about $200 bucks and it sold for $300 back to the same guy ones later, he couldn't live without it. Months later he sold it back and I think a few months later did the same again. Some people are just not satisfied with what they got till its gone. I miss my old Sundown head =( - JOHNNY
whoah! Deep Purples: come taste the band. That has to be one of the greatest funk/rock albums ever! Bolin was a very underrated cat. great feel and great licks.

My favorite Bolin studio album, is "Miami" by the James Gang. Underrated, but still my fav.

Those 'ray gun' sounds were the Echoplex - he was the absolute master of the EP, IMO - such a signature sound. I only recent got into him, so glad I did. Check out 'Live From Ebbets Field' - AMAZING tones on there!
