Hey everyone. I've been trying to get Slash's tone from his earlier GnR stuff (think "Night Train"). I've been bummed about not being able to find a disto box that can get me there. But it's a challenge when you're playing a Les Paul through an AC-30.

I love the "wide open" tone of an AC-30, but is there a way to coax out that Slash tone from it?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The Vox has EL-84s. Slash uses Marshalls with EL-34s.

Go to the link and check out how Fender, Vox, and Marshalls have different tone stacks leading to different sound flavors. http://www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/differences.html

If you stay with the Vox in attempting to capture the Slash tone you will have to account for these tonal differences in your signal chain. You can attempt to shape this through pre-clipping EQ and post-clipping EQ.

Check out a Tonebone. They were designed around ccapturing the basic sound of the Marshall JCM-800 series. Slash uses his own signature version of this famous Marshall line.

Thanks. That's exactly what I'm looking for- pre-clipping EQ and post-clipping EQ.

There are certain pedals which are good for this: ToneBone Hot British I hear is one.

However, can anyone verify this with the equipment (AC-30, LP, etc.)?

Thanks, again!

Also keep in mind that Slash has gone on record saying he uses an eq pedal that is always on to goose the midrange (sounds like 700hz-1k). You can clearly hear the peaky (nasaly) midrange honk on appetite for destruction.
