On Physical Graffitti. After the instrumental breaks, Jimmy does a thing that sounds more like a "gain swell" than a volume swell. He's using a couple of tracks to get the combined effect; I'll probably only get one track for this, so I'm just looking to approximate the vibe. Is there any way to print the effect to the track, or is it something I'll need to do at the board at mixdown? Thanks in advance.

Are you "amping" or "direct"ing? Split your signal after your last effect, put a vol pdl and an OD (or just use an OD'd amp) before whatever the 2nd, split signal is going into and fade in the 2nd signal when you need it. If you can, try to use separate mics for each amp. If not, find the spot where the both amps sound how you like them.

Yes, this particular tune will be "amped", and I'll be getting the dirt from the amp. My one & only volume pedal isn't here at the moment, so I've just been trying to figure this thing out in my head. I'll try your suggestion out when I cut my tracks, thanks.

That part is reversed guitar. They flipped the tape over and he just hit the chord where he wanted it to end and the chord fading out in reverse is the "swell" you hear.

Cool, thanks Bob. Unfortunately, we finally had to read our beloved 2" machine its last rites and put it to bed... we're digital now, so there's no tape to flip. Okay, well I'll scroll through our outboard gear and see if there's a decent reverse patch in there somewhere. All I need is one bar of this effect on a chord, before a lead ride.

We wound up recreating this effect by using an inverse 'verb patch on a Lexicon "Alex", combined with a Behringer Autoquad XR 2400 expander/gate. We had to manually tweak the return level of the decay on the gate. The ridiculous thing is that in about the same amount of time as it took us to get this effect right for one bar of a single C chord, I recorded seven other complete tracks... Seems like flipping a tape might be easier... but at least we got it.

If you were recording to hard drives you could just tell it to reverse then place it in the time spot you needed it. But either way it sounds cool as hell

Wow; I always assumed that was just a volume swell on an overdriven, cranked amp. I know Pagey was fond of reverse reverb via tape flipping, though.
