SG guitar, Marshall style amps (EL34s, he'd later use Laneys) cranked up and a Dallas Rangemaster Treble booster (the Keeley Java Boost is a clone). During Master of Reality and after he often tuned down to C# because bending strings hurt his third finger stub.

I'm not someone who believes you can get his sound in a "box" because he relied so much on power tube distortion and the Rangemaster to effect the harmonic frequencies of the feedback. He's a little like Duane Allman that way--he played big amps and big cabinetts turned up very loud.

I believe he's always been a Laney user. He used the Supergroup early on then switched to the Klipp models. He had his Rangemaster modified after the first album to provide a full boost as opposed to just a treble boost. The wah he used was the Tychobrae Parapedal Wah. The only clone being made of the Parapedal is by Chicago Iron and it's very expensive! If you get a Rangemaster clone with a full boost option you should get pretty close.

Great call. I did know about the Supergroup which is why I mentioned the Marshall as there are a lot of great Plexi clones out there (arguably, the Supergroup was Laney's version of a Marshall Plexi era amp), but I didn't know about the change of the Rangemaster to full boost or his particular choice in wahs. Very interesting.

I read recently that the Laney amps were the poor man's Marshall. And Hiwatt tried to be an upscale Marshall.

I just saw Tony, Ozzy and the boys in Nashville last week, holy cow what a great show! Sabbath with Ian Gillan was my first concert almost 20 years ago, but this was the first time I'd seen the original band. Tony was cool as hell and played and sounded great. 4 Laney full stacks behind him, and he switched off between his old battered SG (copy?) and a newer looking red SG which seemed to be in a different tuning....I didn't really notice much if any stomping, I think he just mainly used the volume knob to get his tone variations.

Wow, check out this link!

I had no idea Tony's live rig was so sophisticated, that's what I call a tasteful use of effects!
