I absolutely love Mike McCready's lead sound on "Yellow Ledbetter". I've tried Marshall's, Boogies and several diferent pedals, but nothing quite gets it. None of the amps have the saturated gain that he had. None of the pedals I tried even came close, except my Fulltone 70. That was the closest, but it was way to gritty. Anyone have any ideas?

mike mccready uses a Strat and a ts808. but as for amps, i'm not really sure. maybe you should try going to his official "we love mike"-website at: wwew.giventowail.com try asking there. (they have a gear section as well - although a bit outdated, ie 1998 - and pearl jam's Sony website have a gear section as well.)

yeah, i totally think the *similarity* between "yellow ledbetter" and kws' "when we cry" off ledbetter heights is inexcusable. i can't believe he (kws) got away with that! i've actually heard people compliment his performances because he "worked in yellow ledbetter." are you kidding me?

Hmmm I happen to love a lot of material that KWS put out, but I know for a fact Ledbetter was writen first, and that anyone can tell its an obvious cop out on KWS to almost copy note for note Mikes great piece.
hey just to let you know he used an old strat into a matchless on that song. trust me, you can tell when it's a vintage strat! the new ones suck so funking hard, it's like two totaly different guitars.

Mike used japanese reissues a hell of alot... to this day people swear by the jap strats of the late 80s early 90s (i think) rating them ABOVE the U.S.A. models even. I played a few of them, and they are great guitars for the most part.

WHOOPS!!! Thats what I get for not doing the math!!! Ignorant me!!! I didn't mean for my first post to come off like I'm a big KWS fan, it's just the one I heard first since I don't like Pearl Jam either
Man, I can't believe this topic came back up. It's been over a year since I first posted it. Kinda strange to see how my tastes have changed since then. Now I don't think that particular solo is all that spectacular, tone-wise. It's still one of my favorite solos though. It's not real flashy or anything, but it fits the song perfectly imho.

Geeeez. Almost 2 years later and still kickin'. I have't even been on this forum since Christmas time. For those of you that may be interested, I can nail that sound dead on w/ a TBIAC thru my bf pro reverb.

A good compressor, a clean fender amp, an analog delay and a Strat with alnico II's in the 2nd position will nail the sound every time. Same formula for the Hendrixy fills in Black.
