Hope this is not old news... Navarro was criticized at one point by Guitar Player as being "not so sophisticated when it comes to gear. He uses Boss pedals for effects..." This is an indirect quote based on memory from an interview with him around the time he began playing with RHCP.

On stage he uses a Boss CH-1 Super Chorus.

He isn't sophisticated period. He's a regular guy, not some intellectual art-rocker. I could care less about his personality, he's a great guitar player.
