Anyone heard this song? Off Antenna.
Just a huge, THICK sound. Very simple chords. I was wondering if it was an amp distortion of some kind or a fuzz of some kind? |

Hey Nerve!
Good question. I'm familiar with this tune (and have the out of print tab book of "Antenna" For ultra thickness and ZZTop-ness mojo, look at the Austone products--specifically for that type tone--look for a pedal called the "Textone"--it's a fuzz with some overdrive characteristics. I played this song last nite thru my Kendrick with the Textone and it was about as dead on as you can get. For less fuzz, more overdrive, I landed a Monster Effects El Dorado overdrive and it honks as well--both are available here at Toyz. If you want some SERIOUS cool Top---check out the "Tejas" album--you will thank me later! |

Thanks Willie.
So you think the Dorado would get me similar tones? |

Hey Nerve!
Yeah--the El Dorado will do similar tones--I think of it a bit more of earlier/1970's ZZ Top. Listen to the clips of the El Dorado here at Toyz, it's very representative of the sound you get. Have you noticed with Billy's playing how he'll play a certain interval and the sound kinda "smears"--the Austone nails that kind of raw/edgey/BIG TONE characteristic. Another possiblity I thought of last nite would be a McFuzz. I don't own one, but had one on loan a while back--it gets a similar tone as well. I have it on the want list right now |
