Simple question: Mike Oldfield frequently uses a lead guitar sound (whether distorted or not) that has a very individual voice. The best way I can describe this is that it is like a fixed vowel sound. It cannot be achieved with a wah pedal nor a graphic equlizer (not ones that I have used). He has been using this since the early days so it is not some new fancy (expensive) effect. Does anyone know how he gets this sound?

Mike used a Gibson SG Jr. for a lot of his guitar work. I've seen pics of him with both the one pickup and the two pickup models. As to how he gets those sounds, your guess is as good as anyone's - he's such a studio whiz, his guitar sound is probably EQ'd and processed six ways from Sunday. I would suggest getting an SG and just experimenting!

I saw Mike using a PRS for the Tubular Bells II show[the one that got released on VHS, saw a broadcast of it... not available on dvd tho Frown ]

Anyhow, I'd be curious to find more about his rig myself... I tried the obvious guitargeek.com but without any luck...

Nice post JanHowell
