I listen to a lot of reggae but never really tried to play it. The older stuff seems to be pretty much guitar--->amp, but the stuff from the mid-70's and on often seems to have an liquidy effect on the guitars. There's some stuff that's obviously wah or ****ed wah, but is there some flanging or phasing going on as well?
Thanks (sorry to ask so many questions). |

Hi,
I play in a Reggae Ska band (as well as my other 3 bands). As far as my "must have" effects for reggae: Phaser Microvibe Envelope Filter Analog Delay Many players use a Wah wah, but I don't in favor of the Maxon AF-9 Auto Filter. A clean amp is of the essence (a good tube Fender is nice). I prefer humbuckers, but singles can work nicely too. The whole magic is really in the strumming and percussiveness of the performance ("um chuka um chuk - um chuka um chuk"), or as they say "the skanks". The guitar is just as important as the drums and bass as a part of the rhythm section. Ya mon. ******************************************************** If we took the bones out they wouldn't be crunchy, now would they? |
