I watched a bit of MTV's "all things rock" last night and much of the music was guitar driven. I was kind of happy about it. It's not that I don't like hip-hop (I do) but lately (last10 years) it just dominates everything. I have been keeping an eye and my ears turned to the younger people and there seems to be a rebellion in them when it comes to popular music and what is shoved down their throats. More kids are into the underground bands, like when I was a kid( I'm 45) and FM Radio was playing album tracks. We all tuned in and went rushing out to find the music that moved our souls. Our ears were strictly the judge of what we bought. It's true, hip-hop changed things and like rock will always be there. But I feel another change coming. I just wonder what some of you guy's think about it. And if you have any predictions of what's to come?

Well I for one would like it to be true... and with The Darkness starting to hit in the US (not as big as in the UK yet mind you) there's a lot of people talkin about it... there's many other bands including old ones that are at it, but it getting into the mainstream again would be 'refreshing' then again if it doesn't happen I don't mind... my cd player sees more play time than radio unless you're including net radio where they do play just about anything and everything to your fancy.

I would love to see a "trend" in bands being able to actually play their instruments!! Most guitarists in the "modern rock" bands today are total hacks on the guitar. Not that we need a flood of shredders (although I personally wouldn't mind that) but some cool, tastful solos that display an actual degree of talent would be nice. Good tone wouldn't hurt either.

Cheers,

CJ

Hello.

CJReaper, I second your comments. Unfortuantely, technology has become so advanced that the music business execs can spend more time on someones marketability and practically nothing on their musicianship. Musicanship has taken a major backseat in the music today.

Frustrated, I have turned to modern county. Many of today's artists flat out rock. Try Tim McGraw's newest. You get the chills listening to it. Its so remeniscent of the Eagles in the 70's, but heavier. Great hooks, ballsy production, great playing, great guitar solos with great tone. That is where my heart is now.

The Darkness is an interesting band. But back in the day, they would have been nothing more than a poor man's AC/DC rip-off band and probably would not have gotten as far as they have.

yum, yum eat'em up..eat'em up.

I haven’t heard the Darkness but I’ve heard people either praising them or slamming them. I’ve never been able to get into Country but I do respect it very much. Those guys can really play and I respect anyone that can really play, regardless of genre. If you like great guitar playing based on great songs, check out a band called OHM. It’s got Chris Poland (formerly of Megeadeth, www.chrispoland.com) playing guitar and it’s awesome! Kind of like fusion but more “rock” with the emphasis on the songs, so the solos actually sound like they belong. Chris comes from a fusion background and man, he has tone and chops! It’s great stuff and very accessible while be very interesting from a musicians’ standpoint.

Cheers,

CJ
