Does anyone know what Alex Lifeson used on 2112? For the heavy parts it sounds like a Marshall and Les Paul or ES 335, and for the mellow parts it sounds like the same guitar(s) but with a Twin or some kind of Fender-type amp. Also, was he using a Univibe or a Phase 90 to get that phasey tone? Anyone sure?

Thanks

Believe it or not, I believe Alex said he used A Fender Super Reverb (4x10") with his ES-335. That was for the dirty rythym sounds. He said he used a Les Paul through a Marshall for the lead tones. I assume the clean guitar parts (Discovery, etc.) was the 335 through the same Fender amp. The phaser was the Maestro Phase shifter. You can get virtually the EXACT same phaser sound with Maxon's PT999 Phase Tone ($139). I have been trying to find a pedal that will get me a tone like he had on Caress of Steel and 2112. I generally like to play through clean amps and just use a pedal for my dirty/lead tones (I also like to play really clean too and have not found a suitable amp that has fender clean tones and good dirty tones, get better luck with overdrive distortion pedals). I have an interview in which Alex discusses the equipment used on these albums....if I can find it I will post or send it to you...

Tom, one way to deal with this is to use a Lehle Dual, or a similar A/B box, to switch between two amps. I do this with a Two Rock Emerald Pro for my dirty amp and either a Fender Twin Reverb or a Mesa Boogie Blue Angel for my clean amp. For bigger venues I use all three. Mike Fuller has a good description of his pedal board and multi-amp setup on his web site in the "Tech Tips and Answers" section.
