Are you talking about the phasy tubular sound? If so, I believe that's a studio trick known as tape flanging and could only have been done in the studio. The only pedal I've heard that comes close is the Paradox TZF.

No, I was talking about the amp or amps he uses for that song. I can almost hear a multiple stereo sound during the first guitar break. I know he used Marshall's and that his sound inspired SRV,now I know why. Guess I'm a late bloomer for Hendrix stuff. But, I know I'm hooked and will probly spend thousands trying to get that sound.

He also used a Roger Mayer modified fuzzbox, the likes of which is currently available as the 'Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz'. I have one of these, and it indeed sounds similar to the fuzz sound of the Axis album.

Im almost positive it was some sort of fender (the same he used on 'little wing' and 'castles made of sand') paired with some sound citys. Im not 100% but i remember reading alot about him trying to get that sound in one of the books about him, i think the one eddy cramer wrote, the first one.

Get a nice clean fender sound and a Lovepedal COT 50 put the nob above 50% and roll the volume nob on a strat back a little, neck pick-up, and you have the sound exactly.

The rhythm sounds like a strat through a fuzz face with the guitar volume rolled back and the solo is the same rig with the guitar volume full up (gotta luv the way a FF cleans up). As for amps I always thought the cleaner hendrix stuff was fender amps but some threads over at TGP have cast some doubts. Some VERY knowledgable Hendrix freaks swear up and down that the vast majority of ALL hendrix studio cuts were marshall amps. This begins to make sense when you consider that some of the vintage marshall amps were not far removed (circuit wise) from the fender amps they were originally cloned from. If I was looking to cop that sound now I would use a strat, a fender tube amp, and any of a multitude of FF clones.

I've gotten really close with my Aiken Invader Mk II (Plexi-type amp) at about 1/3 to 1/2 on the volume knob and the neck pickup's volume rolled back a bit. Rolling back the pickup volume with a fuzzface would probably do a pretty good job as Fender_Bender has suggested.
