Maaaann!!!
I just heard that "blue on black" song by kenny wayne shepherd...dammn he has some kind of tone!!!
Actually, i'm about to get a new set of pups for my strat and all I can think of is how great his tone is. Any of you all are tone EXPERTS??? (and I mean experts)
Well what kind of replecement single coil would be as close to that sound. I know its kind of a weird question since pups don't "MAKE" tone, but the previous pups i've owned weren't that transparent and singing...
Anyways, hope yall tone freaks get some inspiration...

That singing lead tone that you are hearing is coming, in large part, from a fuzz and octave pedal combination. While I have no clue about his gear, I can say that it sounds a lot like a Prescription Electronics Experience pedal at work.

Some Kinman AVN Blues pickups + a couple of Tube Screamers + Fender 6l6 type amp + 12-13 set strings will get you pretty close. The fingers have got to do the rest though.

Hi micheal i 've actually test driven the Octafuzz and its really nice. However I prefer the Ultimate Octave over it.
I just looove the tone in this song, It's so transparent otr something, i don't think it mostly comes from his tubescreamers (at least to my ear), I think I really need the nice cleeaannn amp for that, something like a twin or a vivroverb.

KWS is actually using a Roger Mayer Octavia in that song, which is in essence the same as the Fulltone Octafuzz. The Octafuzz is probably a better unit though.

Also, I believe KWS plays Twins and/or Supers.

your tone is based on pickups, their height, string action the sweet spot in the neck ajustment pedals(the order their in)amp, and most of all your fingers, right hand muteing, ive seen many people play threw the same rig and sound so different oh and of course your EARS where am i going with this? i dont know? one thing i can say fulltone makes good stuff!

From memory that sounds like vibrato from his amp (could be from a Uni-Vibe)....The CC was added to his rig as time went on... Before the CC, he was also using a Dunlop Univibe & a RM Octavia. The recorded solo is indeed a Roger Mayer Octavia.

He used to use a Dunlop Univibe, Analogman TS-9/808 and a Roger Mayer Octavia for that song(octavia after the TS-9). Now he replaced the Dunlop and the R.M. with a Captain Coconut, he doesn't use the Fuzzfoot on that song, just the Octave and the Vibe, and still uses the AM TS-9. He doesn't use amp tremolo.

Chicago Iron Tycobrahe Octavian clone will get you there for sure ( at least the octafuzz part). I own one of these, and I honestly have never heard a better octafuzz unit.

If you are interested go to Chicagoiron.com

Great customer service.
