that isn't omar. It's John Frusciante from the chili peppers...he can run circles around Omar on all aspects of the guitar including tone, phrasiing, improv and creativity. Deloused was a great ablum, Frances was okay, and I have a copy of the new one that should be out in August and omar just sounds horrible...
no offense

okay, but what does john use there then? and how did you get that new album? oh yeah, in defense of omar: try looking at the chords the both of them use and the melody. Omar seems to have more knowledge of harmony than John. as far as improv goes, Omar has an extremely distinctive style that may not seem to hard, but using such extreme intervals in your soloes means you have to know your scales and John, well, I think I've never heard him improvise. He's a good guitarist in his own right, he's got his own style just like omar, but the strength of the peppers IMO is still flea. I still need to get my hands on Frusciante's solo album (Omar's was crap IMO btw)

Okay, first off, have you scene the chili peppers DVD Live at slane castle? No. Secondly, have yo heard one hot minute when John wasn't in the band and Navarro replaced him, that album was HORRIBLE. Secondly, John is considered one of the kings of rythm guitar, just becuase Omar switches on every chorus and delay pedal and hits random notes doesn't mean he's "Advanced" harmonically. Thats all Omar does is hit random notes and put ocatave/fuzz/delay/chorus/flanger/phaser to make it sound "cool". Clearly, John's style appeared to you more since you asking about that solo.
I got the album from a friend who works with the mars volta.
As for the tone...To me, since its JOHN playing it, I would definately say its a fuzz face or zvex fuzz factory, sinec john uses the fuzz factory for a lot of leads (again...watch the Live at slane castle dvd). Its a great sound and a great solo. peace.
Lastly, supposedly Omar doesn't know any theory, and it sounds like it. He knows pentatonics and minors, but thats about it....he couldn't play over changes if his life depended on it.
Have fun.

your still going on about omar?
How about listen to great guitar players like Mike Landau (who, havent heard of him?) Scott Henderson (wha?) Jeff Beck, and John Mclaughlin (o yeah..that one guy that omar's band is kinda compared too)...and then tell me what you think of omar. You'll probably still love him, since the average IQ of a mars volta fan is below 1
