On Mason's 12 string it sounds to me like an old Fairchild compressor. It modifiy's the actual envelope to a small degree. That's why Ringo's crash cymbals had more of a swish to them than a crash. On the DVD "The making of Electric Ladyland" Dave Mason mentions that Hendrix just used a lighter for a slide. The rest is echo

That's one hell of an echo !!!

Can I use something like that live or is a combination tape trick with the echo ?

If you can use it live what would I be looking for ?

Any idea if Jimi engineered All Along the Watchtower or was it someone else ? I thought he recorded that while marathoning in the studio and might have done it himself but I am not sure.

I just listened to it, and to me it just sounds like him with a slide, echo (probably being manually manipulated) and some reverb. There is a lot of panning going on, not only on the main guitar but the echo also.
Eddie Kramer engineered pretty much all of Jimi's recording's. He was as much a part of Jimi's sound in the studio as Jimi. I had the opportunity to meet him once, he was a very nice guy but not very informative Frown Only on things we already know.
He had came into Detroit to check out a band called "Vendetta" (which I swear was Lenny Kravits before anyone new him) our band opened for them and I was running sound for them with Eddie Kramer setting next to me, talk about intimidated! But what is funny to me now is that he was asking me what I thought of the band, like my oppinion mattered Roll Eyes

Not to start an argument here but

If what you said is true why are we soo hot for true bypass everything ?

I also think that there are new point to point wired amps that are just as good if not better than the old amps.

When I listen to a Hartke bass amp I think it could very well be the best bass amp I had ever heard and for guitar the Bruno amps are just as good as the old Fenders and possibly better since they are new , come with great customer support and are light weight in comparison to the old Blackface amps.

I do aggree it was in his hands though but I am not sure what percent...lol Wink

Cool story Bob !

Thanks for the input

It's beginning to look like a life long thing for me to be able to get that sound live.

The lighter he used was a zippo by the way.

Interesting case in point here is that the backwards gating that Jimi could not reproduce live on his tune "Are You Experienced" I saw Eric Johnson do live at the Austin Oprey House back in 1983.

So, although Jimi didn't do it live Eric figured it out without the aid of a Line6 DL4.

I believe he used a volume pedal and a delay to get the backwards gating effect.

So I have to think it can and will be done. If magic is smoke and mirrors then possibly an effect used in an unconventional way would do the trick. I think that sometimes one must think outside the box to reach enlightenment.
