There's a really beautiful bit of feedback that Nels Cline gets going at about 3:17 on "Via Chicago" off the "Kicking Television album. Because it's live, I have no idea how he gets that kind of runaway sound at such a LOW VOLUME. It just fits right in the pocket underneath Tweedy's already quiet vocal.

Any ideas?

It is all in Nel's fingers on that one, I bet his Fuzz Factory helps though.

I didn't know he used an FF... Any idea what he's running in terms of amps?

Nels is using a Marshall half stack with Wilco ,50 watt or smaller. Check out Nelscline.com for all his tech stuff, I think he prefers lower watt combos ,not an amp snob for sure. The guy is just so good, he can play through anything.

From what i remember nels saying he was using the marshall handwired jtm 45 reissues for that tour, usually though he uses oliver amps. But he's used my twin reissue and he sounded exactly the same. Tone is in the hands, I've seen him play thru a solid state Fender stage 100 and sound exactly the same. I believe the only amps he really really dislikes are matchless amps. He thinks they are brittle and void of warmth.... Can't argue w/ him about gear.
