I have no idea but I just have to say Great Band! I love these guys, heavy but melodic and very creative, can't wait to see them live
So funky I can smell it! |

Sounds like either a treble booster or a fuzzface with the guitar volume dialed back into an almost-breaking-up amp. It's got that primitive, raw sound. I think these guys are pedal hounds. And tube overdrive junkies.

Heh... You've come to the right place, friends... Josh's current backline consists of... One Ampeg VT40 4x10 Combo Two Ampeg VT22 2x12 Combos One or two Ampeg V4B Heads with 2x12 Cabs Those 2x12 Cabs appear to be recent, while the rest are all straight out of the 70's... Both he and Nick used to use the same cabinets... I believe they were the huge 4x12 cabs offered by Ampeg in the 70's... Nick still uses two of them, which he chooses to face towards each other and put a mic somewhere in the middle... They both used this set-up on some of the "Rated R" tour dates, and on Ozzfest... I believe they can be seen using these cabs on the DVD that came with the first few copies of "Songs for the Deaf..." As for guitars, he uses an Ovation Ultra GP... These are EXTREMELY RARE! Only around 200 were made in what was, I believe, their short two-year production run... He has a black one with a tune-o-matic style bridge, and a sunburst one that used to have a Badass-style bridge, but has since been modified to have a string-thru style... For all you newcomers, this is the guitar used on "No One Knows..." The rest of the down-tuned "C" stuff is played on the other black Ovation... Recently, he's started using Maton Mastersound guitars (As seen in the "No One Knows" video) with replacement pickups... He's also using an Epiphone "Dot" on a few of the standard-tuned numbers, E.G. "Auto Pilot..." As for effects, Josh isn't really stompbox-crazy... He has a few, including the Ernie Ball Volume pedal mentioned earlier... HE DOES NOT USE A FUZZ PEDAL!!!!! Well... At least, not that I know of... Heh... I've seen them nine times now, and I've NEVER seen a fuzz pedal as part of his set-up... The volume pedal has always been there, that much is true... His main overdrive appears to be all the stuff coming out of his amps... And believe me, they're LOUD, so there's got to be quite a bit of drive coming out of those things... The only other thing I've seen for drive is an old Boss OD-1... That's the old, yellow, two-knob model... It's beat to hell, and I think he used it in the Kyuss days, too... When I saw them last, about three weeks ago, I believe the OD-1 had been retired in favor of either an SD-1 or an OD-3... It was a yellow box, still, but in newer condition and with three knobs... So there you go... The only other pedal I'm reasonably sure about is an SIB Echodrive... Other than that, I don't know! The rest of his stuff appears to be contained in non-descript black boxes... I know he used an Electro Harmonix Bass Synthesizer on many of the "Rated R" tour dates, but I haven't seen that thing in a while... Are you sure he used Marshall heads in the Kyuss days? I could've sworn he was strictly a Tube Works head kinda guy back then... He continued to use that thing into the first years of Queens of the Stone Age, as well... I believe he always ran them into an Ampeg cab, but I may be wrong... What're you using for your source, McCready? -Dave Nailling |

That's weird! I don't remember either Troy or Josh using a phase shifter... I can't think of one song on any album when one's been used, either... Strange! -Dave Nailling |

Hey Dave, as I said in this case my memory is a bit foggy as it was actually 3/27 when I saw them. They packed over 800 people into this place (big bar!) and we pushed our way to about 10' in front of the lead vox/guitarist. That is until all the slam dancing drove us back about 5-8'!!! Anyway, after the show I walked right up and checked out all the gear, but as much as I knew 3/28 , it's long forgotten now. (I had gigs the 28th and 29th too!) ... Meanwhile, here's the sound they constantly used that I get with my Boss pH2 or my Sobbat PB2 phaseshifters.. Have you heard "Miserable" by the band, LIT? That guitar solo sound... Also have you heard "DRIVE" by INcubus? That solo sound.. We do both in my cover band , and they're ez to hit exactly with a phase shifter with a rapid rate setting. They used that sound on at least 6-8 tune during the show. Actually I was shocked how much they used it. Also you can get just about the exact same same with an MXR Flanger, or at least the old grey ones. (I've had mine since the late 70's!) Maybe you know exactly what they used, but that's the sound. As I said, I'm not into ever reproducing someone else's tones, so though I liked it a lot, and they are a KILLER band with KILLER talent, it really didn't matter how they got the tones!!!

quote: Ha! You weren't a jerk, I've heard much worse! I typically don't post on forums unless I know what I'm talking about and believe me I'm a diehard gearhead, but in this case, I definitely am NOT an authority on QOTSA... I liked the 2 tunes they play on the radio up here a lot , and then my drummer played me the cd once. He really liked the Melvins and thought they had a lot of Melvins influence. I just had to go to this show, even though it was a weeknite, a 2 hour trip each way, and I had to work the next day and gig the next 2 nites. I liked the cd that much. Anyway, the concert blew me away and typically at club shows I'm able to get right in front of the guitarist and see all the musictoyz, but in this case it was so packed we couldn't until it was over. At that point, they still had about a step to go up , a bar, and monitors in front of his pedalboard so it was tough to see everything. ANyway, there's a good chance I'll go see them again , but this time they'll be opening for the Chili Peppers and in a MUCH bigger arena. I like the club shows much more... NExt time I get a chance to see them in a club I'll be there. Talk to you later ERIC |

He used a EH MicroSynth (not sure if Bass model) but he used MicroSynth on "Millionaire" on Songs for the Deaf cd, because with enough OD I can hit some of the sounds he was getting. But Ive heard he has retired the Microsynth to some other synth pedal of some sort. Who knows, but yea thats my 2 cents.

I'd have to go back and check, but when they played Letterman a while back, I could have swore he was using some green pedal. Whether it was a fuzz or not, I guess is debatable.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know which amp is the main source of Distortion?

I think Josh relies on his old VT-40 for most of the drive sounds... It's an old 4x10 model with the controls on top... At least, that's my guess... It's either that or a VT-22... -Dave Nailling |

I only ask because I was reading some reviews of both (more of the VT22) and everyone was saying how clean they were. On the album and I'm guessing live (I WILL catch them next time around) it's pretty distorted, you know?

They're clean... Unless you crank them up... Which is pretty much what Josh does... In addition, he runs an old Boss OD-1 in front of them... So there you go... -Dave Nailling |
