I know this isn't quite 100% on topic, but I figured it was close enough.
If anyone out there has seen "Once Upon a Time in the West", you know the buzzy guitar fuzz I am talking about. I am guessing it is a germanium-based fuzz? Anyway, I am dying to get that sound and am looking for pedal suggestions (D*A*M 1966?). Any help would be appreciated |

I'm sorta guessing at the sound you want, and I'm guessing that you could get that sound with a Mosrite Fuzzrite or a clone.
That's what Davy Allen and the Arrows used for those biker-movie soundtracks (this info courtesy of the Nuggets box set). Also keep in mind that they often used barritone guitars in spaghetti western soundtracks. -- T. G. -- |

Do you have any examples of Mosrite Fuzz Clones?

I haven't tried it myself, but there is the Buzzrite at Tym Guitars

Dude, I've been trying to find out for years who played on that soundtrack. The guitar player on OUATIA was so sick. It give me goosbumps. Leone was the best movie composer ever. It sounds like a fuzzrite though with alot of reverb or some type of delay. It kinda has that evil surfer vibe to it.... Formerly known as dildor. |

I believe you mean "Ennio Morricone was the best movie composer ever." And I would have to agree! I will also agree that it's probably a Fuzzrite. So there you go! -Dave Nailling |

Yes your right Dave, that was what I meant to say. I get the Leone/Morricone thing mixed up sometimes. Leone is my favorite director along with Peckinpah (spelling?). Formerly known as dildor. |

supposably morricone could play guitar, although i've never found out if he or who else actually
played all those great lines.a mosrite or maestro or any cheesey sounding fuzz should get you close.& you have to use a single coil p/u w/verb & trem for the fist- full -of -pasta tone .dildor, there was a great band in austin in the early 90's called death valley that played spaghetti western-surf instros.i have their one cd.mostly originals but they sound like they are the real deal.it is one of my alltime fav's.i'm pretty sure they broke up.did you ever hear of them? t.l.a.m.f. ! |

No Twang, I never heard of those guys at all?! Got to see if they are still around, or they CDs are still around. There is a band around here called Friends of Dean Martinez that has that kind of flavor though, and they are very good. Instrumental band with a pedal steel player that plays through a fuzzbox and other effects, and he is awesome. Kinda in the same vein, but more tripped out Southwest Desert type of music. Very relaxing. Formerly known as dildor. |

Friends of Dean Martinez just provided the music to the silent film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown. I was wondering what they sounded like! You and I should hook up sometime, Dildor. Feel free to email me at Jagenstein@yahoo.com. -Dave Nailling |

friends of dean are a cool band, but alot more laid back than death valley.they played spaghetti western -surf instros @ a good speed,
like a modern surf-instro band.i'm pretty sure they broke up.austin also had another great instro band that did some spag-western stuff, plus surf called the sand blasters.i don't know if they are still together.shit, austin had some killer surf-instro bands: teisco del rey, don leady from the tailgators,3 balls of fire, death valley, sandblasters,& the big daddy of them all- the big guitars from texas.what is in the water down there? maybe the mescal... t.l.a.m.f. ! |

So I picked up a FuzzRiot by Vintage FX, which is basically a modded version of a Mosrite Fuzzrite. 98% nails the sound I was looking for. Woo hoo.
Plus, I bought a new Gretsch Duojet 57. Even bigger WOO HOO. |

I have an old Fuzzrite and it sounds much like the fuzz used in that movie, which is my favorite spaghetti western.

The earlier "twangy" guitar parts were played by a guy named Alessandro Alessandroni, he also conducted the vocal choir and did the whistling.
The later fuzzier stuff was done by Bruno Battisi D'Amario. All written by Morricone. The April 1997 issue of Guitar Player has a great interview with Morricone and other composers and players from the movies. The issue has Clint Eastwood holding a Tele, dressed as in the Morricone movies. Bob Sweet Sweet Sound Electronics www.sweetsound.com http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=664651 |
