Telepicker, they don't sound the same as the old ones??? Damn, too bad! Those old ones sound awesome and they are fetching big bucks now! That was to be expected though I guess. |

I currently own a Matchless JJ30 from 1998 and a Matchless Clubman that was just made so it is a 2002. Both amps sounds awesome . The new Clubman really sounds great so I want everyone to know that Phil is making some great amps these days. I also have owned a 1992 HC30 which was great and I just sold my Bad Cat Black Cat. The Bad Cat's are awesome amps as well but the Matchless amps have more chime and sparkle to them and I really like that sound more. I would say that the Bad Cat's are thicker and fuller sounding so it depends on what you want out of your amp.

I own one of the first Clubman 35 heads that was made. I am told that there were less than 200 of these made. It is the most musical amp I have ever played. I just played one of the new ones at a local store, with Groove Tubes instead of my Rubies, and it just wasn't the same. The new model is supposed to be a copy of the version that I own. There is just something that is missing in the mojo of the new one that I tried. But, I have heard some of the new ones that sound great. Just keep looking. If you are looking for the Matchless sound, try the Dr Z stuff also. It sounds great.

Ian Moore uses a Clubman 35, has far at least 8 years now.
That is one of the best tones I've ever heard!

http://www.smfamps.com/amp_info.htmmy "15-watter" combo is fitted out with mullards, & not only has that spangle & chime you love, but a high gain channel that i have yet to find an overdrive/distortion pedal that sounds better than. plus, the reverb (there's a 2nd knob for tone) is gorgeous, & the "sonic" hatchback works! sounds like an ac30 through a quad box. this amp is no bloody joke! don't let the pcb board fool you; the components are top notch. and it's loud as hell! but the mullard's really bring this amp's tones into focus. if you take the time to demo one, you will not believe your ears. mark sampson knows what to do with el84's! ml
