i'm getting more and more confused by the number of cabinets available and the configuration. i want to get an open (or partially open) back cabinet for my EVM 12s speakers.

i have looked at Mesa, Madsound (which has what they call a detuned cabinet made out of antique pine), Brown Soun/Tone Tubby, Jenkins, Clark and Avatar. the prices on all except the Avatar cabinet are very expensive, and while i know you get what you pay for, 4-600.00 for an unloaded cabinet seems excessive.

anyway, if anyone has experience with any open-back cabinets and can recommend things to look for, and/or good values, i'd appreciate it very much.

thanks!

jon

I always look for used un-loaded cabs. Rehearsal studios, rental places, garage sales, etc. If you want an open back 2-12", look into an old twin reverb that's missing it's chassis. you can probably find one for under $100.00. $4-$600 for an un-loaded cab is a bit excessive, but thats what they go for.

I own a pair of Avatar 2x12 open backs. Great speakers for the money. I use Celestions Lead 80's int them.

does the Mesa cab offer a more neutral sound due to the type of board used? if so, is it pine, partical board or plywood?

some cabs i've heard are very "dead" sounding, while others like a Clark pine cabinet are very resonant. though i'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

thanks very much!

I'm not sure what the MBoogie box is made of but the one I'm reffering to is a 3/4 open/closed back.MBoogie does not offer materials used on thier site.Anyone else know more?
Pine and birch are popular and apparently selected for tonal qualities that relate to guitar, particle board( mdf) is commonly used for baffle material mainly because it is vibration free, aparently.

Carvin makes a nice open back 2 - 12, I think they have a standard model and the Steve Via Legacy cab, the standard is about $300 (not sure about the price). I have some Carvin stuff that I'm very fond of. Just another option.

Carry On!

the carvin vintage/tweed open-back extension cabs are great for the $.the speakers are o.k.,
but they won't sell them unloaded. i was looking for an inexpensive open-back 1x12 cab last spring for my oahu head.i had a mojotone
12" speaker.so after much looking around i bought the carvin.& it has been fine.the vintage
cabs are less $ than the vai cabs.

Jon, about a year back I bought an unloaded handmade 2-12" cab from a company called Earcandy. It's closed back, but has 2 ports on front. I paid about $150.00 shipped, and the quality is better than anything else I've tried. It's extra deep, 16" and as a result has incredible bass. the ports also make for great highs.

I stuffed it with a 12" Celestion 150 watt Sidewinder and a 12" EVM. It's easily the best 2-12 I've ever heard. He can probably custom-make an open-back also. Do a web or EvilBay search for Earcandy, you may see something you like. I play rock, no metal, and this cab suits me perfectly.
