Long time no talk guys..
Just stopping by to ask a couple of questions and get some insight from the members of Toyz on my new toy! If any of you remember, I have been a strat dude since day 1. I am still super into Jimi, Mayer, Stevie, Chili Peppers, etc, but found myself getting really into Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, STP as well. This made me want to check out a Les Paul. Well, I ended buying the 1958 VOS Les Paul. I fell in love with this thing. Its a whole different world when compared to the strat thing. I have a gear question though. I'm still using the Fargen Blackbird, the pedal setup is as follows: Picture Wah-->Fulldrive II Mosfet-->Fulltone Mini-Deja-->Keeley Compressor-->Keeley Modded BD-2-->Analogman Chorus-->Boss Delay-->Boss Tuner. The Fulldrive is okay with the LP. The BD-2 with the gain cranked gives a creamy sound that cleans up pretty well with the volume. It reminds me of the Billy Gibbons rock tone... My question is this - what are the normal effects that are used with LPs? What are most of you guys using? What's the most common pedal out there for LP players that play rock, blues, country? Thanks guys. Looking forward to your responses on this. P.s. What's up Troy T., Tone Dog, Donner, Lawrence, Tim Z, Corleone and all the other guys that used to hang here?? |

So much out there these days I wouldn't know where to begin.
The 58 VOS is a nice start. I'm playing a Gretsch exclusively these days so I'm no help. |

Barber DDSS's sound nice with LP's. So does the Brown Rabbit.

I'm not a Les Paul guy per se, but I use humbuckers and a lot of people complain about TS circuits (Fulldrive) and buckers.
OCD is great with any pickup. Buckers overloaded my RMC 1, so I switched to a Teese Wizard wah-less Voodoo Child, but works way better with buckers IMO. I don't know how the Picture wah will be, but that can be an issue. Do you still need the compressor? Just a thought. When I went to double coils, their fatness eliminated the compressor. |

I like the BD-2 with the LP so far, the Fulldrive doesn't do it for me with 'buckers. The compressor is used with my single coils, which I'm not getting rid of. I'm keeping my strats forever, I just wanted to add an LP to the collection. Thanks for your response and advice. |

A "RAT" is pretty cool with an LP. The Keeley modded version is a great pedal.

I did a similar thing in 2004. I was happy with the FD2 until I bought my LP Classic. I went through a few overdrives.
My standard setup is LP Klon AB to tuner EH DMM Amp (WEM ER15-EL84 or Cornell Romany Plus single ended any valve 10w combo). The Klon was a happy accident for me as I bought one used to shift on (done this with Lovetone stuff) and never shifted it. At low volume I really like the Blackstone but in live situations it IMHO sounds really horrible. I also like the King of Tone with the Les Paul. But mine is inop. I also like the TBIAC with the Les Paul but mine broke and the shop took it back. I also like the EH Screaming Tree but guess what? So I'm drawn to the Klon at the moment. |

Well you certainly picked the right guitar, a strat compared to a Les Paul is like comparing a Rolls Royce to a baseball bat. The best effects are to use no effects at all. What you need is a good amp that has plenty of real tube overdrive. turn the guitar volume knob down to get a clean sound, turn the guitar volume up to get roaring. That's exactly what Billy does on stage! No footswitches, they suck. OK keep the wha wha. Pedals are nothing but noise and headaches, buy a Marshall (Billy did that too, in fact THREE). There is no pedal that makes anyone play better or sound better, it's all talent. Go see a ZZ concert, learn what guitar playing really is, they rule.-ZZT fan |

+1 on what mykey says.. A PAul going direct into a nice amp just can not be beaten. JUst get to know the guitar, I finally eq my guitar knobs just right for me after a while. First I use to max the Volume Knob and by doing so, I missed getting a clearer tone and more articualte tone definition. Which is addictin. (I also advise that you get a nice guitar calbe like an Evidence Audio Melody or Lyric Cable that is a great move anyone can make towards great tone) I use my Guitar>into a Looper> Amp The direct sound is killer, but on one loop I have a MAxon 808 OVerdrive which is so right for heavy and tight TS riffs. Also a nice VOx847 wah rocks good with a Paul. True happiness is the one that is shared. Enjoy life, Rock and Prosper. |
