I've got a bit of a dilemma. I've been looking for some Strat replacement pickups. I generally play in the psychadelic rockin' Hendrix-y Zappa styles. I've heard some samples of all the Lollar's and the Vintage Hot and Blues Special from Fralin. Also heard the ones from Kinman. I personally like the Kinman Woodstocks. I saw that Fralin makes a Woodstock 69 pickup, but haven't heard it. Can anyone give me a comparison of the Fralin and Kinman Woodstock? Which is better? For some reason the Lollar's didn't stand out as much to me. I do like the Lollar Tweeds on the SRV sound samples over at www.acmeguitarworks.com. Any and all help is appreciated.

Try Bare Knuckles pick-ups.... Mothers Milk. There are sound clips on the Bare Knuckles site. I have not used to Lollar's but I have used the Fralin's and Kinman's and the Bare Knuckles were pretty close to the tone you are looking for. Hope this helps.

I listened to some samples of the Mothers Milk pickups. They do sound good. John Frusciante used/uses them. I'm not particularly into the sound he gets. A little more quack than I want.
Maybe I need to hear more samples before I count them out.

Another Bare Knuckle option with less quack are the Irish Tours. I used those for a while....very powerful, the bridge is wound hotter....More of a SRV tone.

I think Teddy has some Suhr V-60's coming in. These came stock in my Suhr and have an awesome tone....very quiet as well.....

I've been listening to more samples of the Mothers Milk and some of the Irish Tour. The Mothers Milk has a phenominal clean sound that is so natural. I didn't hear any really impressive samples of them with overdrive/distortion through them though. I did like the Irish Tours. How do the Mothers Milk sound compared to the Fralins with overdrive?

Well.... basically you're talking about 2 different players and 2 different tones.

I play through a tweed amp so what I can tell you is the Mothers Milk will get you much closer to Jimi from that starting point...more quack....yes....in position 2, but you still need to push your amp a little to get a more overdriven sound....

I use a Fulldrive 2 or OCD depending on the song and venue. The Fralin's were cleaner, more sterile sounding...that is the best way I can explain it...the Fralin's are good pickups, but like not in the same class...

To compare the Irish Tours, I used more of my amps' natural overdriven sound to get the same tone......2 different windings, 2 different tones.....I play in a Jimi tribute group so I only use the bridge pickup for one song (Spanish Castle Magic), the hot winding of the Irish Tour bridge was not all that important for me.....in fact too over the top....

Personally, I liked the the Mothers' Milk tone better between the 2. They are really great pickups....the quality & tone is to die for. They are crystal clear and at volume very quiet. You will not be disappointed!!

I will tell you that once I found the V-60's (Suhr) the tones I was looking for were easy for me to get....I'm not trying to push the brand but they are awesome!!

Hope this helps you.........

Thanks for the help Ernie. I'll definately consider the Suhr V-60's along with the Mothers Milk. Would you say the V-60's get you more of a Hendrix vintage vibe compared to the Mothers Milk pickups?

Without knowing your entire set up I would say go with the Bare Knuckles, they would be closer to the tone your looking for.... Big Grin

One last question for you Ernie. Is it really worth the extra $80 to get the Bare Knuckles over the Suhr V-60's?
