I just finished doing the keeley mod to my ds-1 according to the info available online. It works pretty well except if I crank the distortion I get a strange octave type hum that doesnt sound quite right . Anyone have any ideas on how or what to troubleshoot? Im thinking something in the clipping diodes section, I did the one LED and the LED in series with the diode. Any help would be great.

Does the sound occur only with max gain ?
is the wiring neat and short as possible ? I did that mod too and although mine sounds good , it has an erratic decay the distortion almost sounds like it gets gated as the sustain dies out but some of the clean signal remains a little longer . Anyone got an idea of what is happening ? tia email if you can gboboski@shaw.ca |

I ended up doing a lot of troubleshooting. I may have had an issue with a trace, but most likely it was flux build up on the board itself. I used a toothbrush and some circuit cleaner and brushed lightly to clean it. I used to get a squeal or hum like an octave down when I cranked the dist all the way up. Now it works great! |

Cool!
Now, replace all resistors in the signal path with carbon comps for a smoother sound. It's a bit of a pia but there is a difference in tone. Not going to get into why but it does sound better if you get my drift. |
