I just got this and I have no idea what it is.

Yeah, I know a pic would help, but I don''t have a digital camera. Maybe next year.

Anyway- it's been worked on, but it's definitely a Fender with the piggy back configuration - latches on the bottom to hook to a cabinet..

The front panel looks to have been replaced - no model name or number. The front controls:
in, in, Boost switch, Treble, Middle, Bass, in, in, Boost switch, Volume, Prescence, Reverb.

The back has the following controls:
Ground toggle, fuse, power, standby, speaker out (50 watts), ext speaker out.

Engraved on the back plate - A 25597.

Two big ass glass tubes.

I haven't peeled it open or even cranked it up yet. I'm told it sounds sweet but I'd like to have an idea what I'm firing up before I hook it to my speaker cabinet.

Any ideas?

Process of elimination......

First, the serial number seems to make it circa 1967.

Your reference to "two big ass glass tubes" combined with the speaker out being marked at "50 Watts" makes me suspect Fender Bassman at first glance. You mention no third larger tube, so I assume we're talking about solid-state rectification.

The controls on the front correspond to the Bassman LOCATION of "input, input, switch, knob, knob, knob"....and then repeats...."input, input, switch, knob, knob, knob". But, of course, yours has obviously been modified. So at least the chassis appears not to have been drilled for additional controls.

Modifications seem to be complete relocation and function changes to the front control knobs. The "Bright" switch became a "Boost" switch. A presence control was added. And, obviously, the addition of some kind of reverb.

If it's still the stock tranny, it should be a 4-ohm speaker output.

So MY guess would be a heavily modified 1967 (could have been "blackface" or "silverface" originally as 1967 was the transition year) Fender Bassman.
