Have a friend, Allen, who has a Marshall JCM 900 early '90s combo that has a problem that just came up. As we were trying to play it today, plugged in amp, connected guitar, NO SOUND! Not even a hum!
To troubleshoot, we left it on to let the tubes and transformers warm up. After a while of waiting, all tubes were warm to touch, but the transformer behind the guitar cable input was cold as though to suggest it wasn't working. If anybody here might know what is going on, or if anybody has some suggestions it would be greatfully appreciated. Allen is sad. |

Tube amps required technical mantainance, I had trouble with a Marshall Tsl amp. I learned that a knowledgable repairman has to bias the tubes (regulate voltage of the amp so that all the tubes receive same voltage) plus there are other internar parts that do wear out after a while so dont try to repair yourself. A music store that sells Marshall Amps should have the repair manuals, good luck.

Sounds like a small issue but if you are not a tech type than take it to an amp tech. Being in Bakersfield you should go to the man himself at PlexiPalace. He is the guru of all gurus on those bad daddys. Now clearly the plexi palace guys are really about "Plexi" style Marshalls but likely know there business on the JCMs.
Also check out Jerry Blaha @ AmpCrazy in Hollywood. He does shit loads of Marshall repairs. ted

Thanks Bill. You're probably right. Allen and I aren't real amp tech guys. We just play them. He'll have to check PlexiPlace. This is really disappointing to me too, as I'm in the market for a Marshall sounding/style combo amp. I've been researching on Marshall combos and there tends to be mixed reviews on these amps. Technical problems! I know that they sometimes run hot, but other problems? Kind of a turn off for a possible consumer, huh. |
